Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

An independant pointed out that the new compressor on my car was actually the original one and hadn't been changed as there was oily dirt on the threads which would have naturally been cleaned out as the nuts holding the pipes were backed off!! Repair sheet said new compressor but actually it was never touched!

Interesting! I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on mine but if it isn't fixed, I'll be asking for a new vehicle. I'm sick and tired of being dicked around on parts and having stuff 'fixed' or replaced under warranty on a $60K vehicle that's just over a year old.

Theres always something. How's your alignment? Does it pull to the left? Can you drive straight with no hands on the wheel?

No issues with my wheel alignment on mine but I'm guessing there is on yours?

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Hello folk, I have recently encountered a very strong harmonic noise coming from the engine bay of our GC Overland. This noise just started without any other warning signs causing me to call into the nearest service station due to its high pitched sound. On quick inspection after removing the plastic engine cover it was found the noise was initiating from two small black pipes (running from the rear left to right front) which I believe are some type of return pipes. By gently moving these pipes the noise completely disappeared. It has returned a couple of times over long periods of nothing and are fixed by again gently moving the pipes. When the noise is present you will feel these pipes singing and when touched actually feel like they are electrified but are not. I have been told they are fuel return lines. As she is due for a service shortly I intend to have this problem and pipes dealt with.

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Is the sound rather an embarrassing pitched sound more heard from inside the cabin?

It is much louder inside the vehicle but can be heard from outside as well.

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

There are some small diameter black metal pipes that enter the firewall at the left side (facing forward). I moved then a little and packed a bit of rubber foam between them to ensure they don't touch anything or each other to avoid any resonances. Perhaps this might help if that's the problem. I like to go over the car to ensure that all wires and hoses are secure and not flopping around against anything. Where it can't be avoided I've used bits of split plastic electrical conduit to keep things separated. The conduit can be got cheaply (in Oz) at Bunnings or Jaycar.

I was going to suggest leaving the missus at home when you go out to see if that made a difference but on second thought the noise would probably be a whine rather than harmonic
