Hi Sean, Does yours make the noise all the time? I would expect a suspect TXV to make the noise all the time. Reason for asking, I get no noise when moving only when stopped. I'm advised insufficient cooling at the condensor in front of the radiator would dramatically increase the pressure of the High Pressure side of the system such that the pipes would shudder/squeal. Can you confirm with him that he is seeing the pressure spike on the Low Pressure Side and not the High Pressure Side. Hopefully one of us gets a fix soon. At least youv'e had a new compressor already. I've heard mine might have suffered damage due to the overfill by Jeep.

Yeah mine does only make it when stationary or just after being stationary.

I will ask him low or high then?

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

I just ran my GC and observed the AC system, couldn't be bothered getting my gauges out at this point in time (sorry!) - had it cranked to 16C so it would run as hard as it can, the engine itself was cold not having been run at all today so no need for the fan to run to maintain coolant temps at all.

The AC compressor cycled on and off pretty rapidly, say 10 to 15 seconds on and 10 to 15 seconds off, the liquid line was quite warm (say 35 degrees C) indicating a decent head pressure but not totally obscene, it was only after running for 2 or 3 minutes that the fan cycled on. I think the fan may be a multispeed number and not variable speed, it does seem to "ramp" but I think that is just it switching between speeds, it seemed to cycle off very quickly with little ramp down time - indicating to me its not on a speed controller or it would not cycle anywhere near as much.

The HP controller is a 3 wire job, looks exactly like a transducer which fits exactly with the rest of the design of the car, it would likely have a control loop in the car's computer rather than an old school switch cycling the compressor on HP. I couldn't locate anything on the LP side controlling the compressor - there might be though but I was in the dark and the little torch in the boot ran out of batteries pretty quick The above leads me to believe there is some control loops in the computer based on HP cycling both the fan and compressor on and off, and these seem to be totally separate loops - comp wasn't necessarily running the whole time but fan still cycled on and off, and vice versa.

It also wouldn't surprise me if Chrysler have a little stepper valve in the evap in lieu of a standard TXV, would also fit with the rest of the vehicle being high tech. With a set of gauges on the car, if it replicates the noise it should be pretty easy to see what's going on.

On listening to the sound in the youtube video it seems to me it could be a large pressure differential across the TXV (or electronic valve) causing that trumpeting as the pressure equalises, not so much an equalising sound but more a singing as the valve seat opens slowly - just a stab in the dark on that and could be easily verified with a set of gauges and wouldn't be too feasible with a TXV but very feasible with an electronic valve, especially if there is no comp cycling based on LP (which is also entirely feasible). If it is there may be a glitch in the control loop or a transducer out of whack.

I realise this post has not helped in any way to clear the matter up but it's just what I observed. Hope you both get it cleared up soon!

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Guys just a thought if you search the threads on the hvac and the recirc function automatically turning off the person who designed the ac system popped online to answer some questions. They did note that they would only intermittently check the site but it may be worth pming them to see what they can tell you about the system wrt your issues.

Cheers Mendo. Tried that a month ago but not heard anything yet. Looks like Sean might get his TXV fitted soon hopefully fixing the problem.

If its the TXV, would the trumpeting not be all the time. Right now, I have to be stopped for a minute for the sound to occur.

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Yes and no... it's definitely not a normal function or noise of the TXV, in 18 years working in refrig I have never heard a TXV make a sound like that but it is possible I guess - the greater the pressure drop across the valve the more likely it is to happen and if were to be from the TXV it would be a scenario with high discharge pressure and low suction pressure and the valve moving off its seat from a closed position and possibly sticking causing the refrigerant to make an audible noise as it flows through it. I have heard other valves in a refrig system make exactly that noise but they aren't in a car AC system. When you are idling and the compressor cycles off it causes the suction pressure to rise, this in turn is a closing force on the TXV, so when the compressor cycles on and the suction pressure drops (depending on coil conditions) the valve will begin to open - this could possibly explain the scenario of only doing it when idling.

Hey Sean,
Yep, same noise only when hot and stopped. Waiting two months and still no sign of parts. Keep me posted on the fix, how long it took and what they did. I heard the TXV and evaporator might be accessable from the front passenger footwell and might only need the glove box and surround taken out? Anyhow, speak soon. Gotta say, took a trip to and from Rocky this week and can't fault the car in any way. What a superb drive. Hopefully things on the service front pick up soon!! Good luck Mate

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Well this problem has just happen to me.
Car is hot and stopped for a min or so and I can feel and hear a vibration, like the aircon kicking in. As I have only been the regular driver for 2 weeks, I had not noticed it until I drove to Gold Coast.
I am hoping someone finds the proper fix before the muppets at Jeep get to see it.

Hey Sean,
How was the fix. Hopefully the dash is back together and you are back out on the road. Still waiting to hear from service from last Tuesday where my parts are up to but waiting in anticipation to hear your good news!!

Cheers.

Re: Harmonic noise coming from engine...

Hey Guys

Just picked it up today after two days in surgery. Txv and evaporator replaced. So far so good however I had to drive it home from sunshine coast tonight so the the real test will be tomorrow when I can get it hot during the day and then idle. I will post tomorrow night.

Sean
