Harmonic Noise High Pressure Diesel Injector Pump Return

Hi

Late last week the Jeep developed a loud harmonic noise while driving and idling.

It was a constant noise that generally was louder when deaccelerating, otherwise was much the same pitch or tone and did not change pitch with engine revs.

Upon inspection I found that it was one of the return pipes to the High pressure Diesel Injector Pump that was actually vibrating. Felt a bit like an electric toothbrush or the tip of one of those other "appliances" that may be found in ones Wife's bottom bedside drawer, if indeed one would have one. (I'm referring to wife, not the appliance, as they seem to go hand in hand.:))

Anyway, by putting some gentle pressure on the pipe, the vibration would cease and the noise stop. So I rigged up a cable tie arrangement that stopped the vibration and noise as per the photo below.

Has anyone else had the same, and if so, what was the fix? My concern is that maybe I have a non return valve or worse, the injector pump is on the way out. I shudder to think what that may cost. Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

That's interesting. Unfortunately mine didn't stop with a restart. May remove the cable ties on a couple of weeks and see if it is still an issue.

Zzkazu, thanks for the message. Good to hear that your noise has disappeared. I'll leave the zip ties in place till the next service and try it without at that time.

I can't recall the fuel tank level when ours started making the noise. Just try and grab the fuel return pipe while idling as per my photo further above and see if stops or if it is vibrating / humming.

Yes I can confirm mine is also the fuel pipes , only happens when the fuel tank is near empty ,appears worse under the car near passengers feet., very strange. Perhaps an isolation rubber has failed and the pipes touch the car frame when there is less weight in the fuel tanks.
