HID Headlight Bulbs

I just had my HID headlight bulb blow. I can't believe the dramas I have had to get a replacement!!

I just been on a massive trip from Brisbane to Port Douglas via Roma, Emerald, Charters Towers & back the coast road. I was out at Carnarvon Gorge when I noticed by headlight wasn't working. No problem I thought, I get a new one when I'm in Emerald.

There isn't a jeep dealership in Emerald and I tried every spare parts shop in town & they all suggested I detour to Mackay to get one from the dealer. In the end, I couldn't get one any where (including Mackay, Townsville & Cairns). In desperation I even tried a few Toyota dealerships (200 series have HID), but they too had no spare bulbs in stock either. I just had to accept that I'll need take my chances with the roos with one headlight till I get back to Brisbane.

On my return, I visited my local dealer in Brisbane and they didn't have bulbs available. They said they would have to order from Melbourne and there would be a 4 day wait. Lesson learnt; I'm going to carry a spare bulb because you'll need to be able to hang around in a town for week to wait for a new one to be sent.

When I asked how much the replacement would be I nearly fell over. Take a guess how much headlight bulb? ..................$540 + fitting!!!!!! As my car is only a year old, I suggested that it should be covered by warranty. I was told that all bulb are excluded from and when I questioned this he said if I bought a new bulb at $540 and it blew next week, I would have to pay for another one! (Although he did suggest that probably won't happen).

I ended up ordering two Phillips replacement bulbs from Melbourne on Ebay at $90 for two. At least I have a spare now.

When looking for a replacement bulb, I stopped in at Repco (across the road from the Jeep dealership) and they said they can order in Narva bulbs for $200. The sales assistant told me the Jeep dealer had just ordered 6 of exactly the same bulb about an hour ago! I can't believe the markup that the dealers put on these! When I suggested to the dealership they consider using non-genuine replacements, the sales manager said that Chrysler won't let them and can only fit genuine products. Yeah right!

Hopefully no one will get caught paying these ridiculous prices. The bulbs are actually really easy to change via the hatch under the front guards.

Thanks Yoda

Re: HID Headlight Bulbs

I've seen blown headlight bulbs reported in a few cases now - and also seen reports they were covered under warranty. In January there was a dialogue about it on Caravaners forum (australia) in the epic Jeep Grand Cherokee thread.

I posted on Caravaners forum at the time -

"I checked my service and warranty booklet that was in the car when delivered March 2012 - and printed on page 7 amongst what is covered under warranty items is the exception about the Zenon bulbs being covered under the basic warranty.
BUT - on the front of the booklet is a sticker saying that in order to comply with local requirements a separate Australian warranty has been developed etc etc - your dealer will give you a copy or go to these websites - here's one - http://www.jeep.com.au/for-owners
Great - if you check the service and warranty link on that page it will bring up a .pdf with the exception for the zenon globes.
HOWEVER - if you check the warranty link immediately below it will bring up a January 2012 issue - that removes the exception to the zenon globes!
Take your pick.....
I think you can make a very good case that Jeep has produced conflicting information, and still available on their websites, and push pretty hard that the globes be covered.
Probably the outcome will be that Jeep will wake up and modify the booklets linked on the websites to the January 2012 issue. Not so good for those of us who haven't yet burned out a globe though......"

Just now I checked the link again and the .pdf is still there (with the exception covering the xenon globes for the basic warranty).
It would be worth while checking your book and if it is the same as mine perhaps another visit to the dealer with it in hand might be in order. I think you could create a long running argument at the service counter!!

From what I have seen any D1S H.I.D bulb will fit. You just need to ensure the colour is correct. The factory bulbs are around 4300k and if you fit ones with a higher colour temperature the light will appear more blue.

I found the link below handy. I only had to change the passenger side and I was able to access this from the access hatch under the fron mud guard.

Thanks for that Jimmy, going on a 2 month trip with the camper in tow, so I might grab one just in case.
Cheers Yoda
