How to make steering adjustments?

I somehow keep bunging out the steering a little so the wheel is off Center when I'm going straight.

Alignment is fine, so no need to go there and I only trust two shops to get it rite. But I can't keep taking it back for off-Center steering wheel issues every time I hit a kerb!

Shops don't even charge me to correct it since it's such a simple 5min job, but I feel bad for taking it in. Can't seem to find any videos on how to either for the wk2's.

Seem to recall seeing the tech go under the car to tighten or adjust something, didn't even go on the hoist. Bit embarrassed to ask what they adjusted to be honest.

Cheers

Re: How to make steering adjustments?

From under the front of the vehicle you can see the adjustable section on the rack out near the wheels, just after it leaves the flexible boot. Threaded with flats and a big lock nut.
What they do is loosen the lock nut and screw one side in and the other side out to effectively move the rack sideways slightly to recentre the wheel.
Must be done equally so as not to upset the wheel alignment.
You need to work out which direction to move the rack to realign. Maybe only half a turn to a turn at a time then check.
Try to make sure you don't upset the balljoint angle and make sure everything is locked up again when you finish.
John
Forgot to mention that if you are knocking the steering wheel out of centre then you have an wheel alignment issue - not a steering centre issue…...

How to make steering adjustments?

Thanks, just took it in just now to the shop to check the alignments and straighten the wheel. They claimed it was only out so so minor. After driving off, came back and the wheel was a tad out again in the opposite direction. I gave up, I'll try it out myself over the weekend as per your advice. They reckon it's picky and they adjust it 1/8 of a turn at the tie rod ends. But I guess they gave up to satisfy my likings. Paid for it this time

Once I get it spot on, I'll make sure I'll put a touch of paint at the thread and lock nuts to mark it.

They had another jeep 14 model do the same this week, doesn't take much to knock them out considering they're built for off-road.

Took it in again on the way to work this morning. Watched exactly what needed to be done. It's spot on again, will mark it with a touch of paint when I get home.
