Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

about to go to snow in victoria( diamond chains mandatory). so i need new chains for the 265x60 x18 tyres, on the my2014 gc laredo.
i have been told there are clearance issues and the only chains that may fit are the 'weissenfels' or 'thule' that have smaller diameter chain 9mm vs 16mm of other brands
has anyone fitted the larger chains to the gc and driven successfully?

Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

We have been up to Mount Matlock every weekend for the last 5 weeks, in both the GC and the JK. I must admit that both are more than capable but the GC feels a lot more sure footed in snow mode. The track up to the fire tower is 4WD only even in the dry so you get some amazed looks from the jacked up Patrol and Cruiser drivers when you cruise past in the GC

Cheers

You do need them and must fit them if requested when entering the resort. More often than not, they will make 2WD fit them but it will be optional for 4WD. However conditions last Friday were so bleak, the Resort Management Board at Buller made all vehicles including 4WD's fit them. No chains, no entry. And you can be fined by the police for not carrying them if required.

That being said, in the 30+ years I have been driving up to the snow, I have never had to fit chains to a 4WD, just lucky I guess!!

Give this mob a ring, they are on Bourke Rd, Camberwell and are quite knowledgeable regarding all things chains and roof racks. Also have a policy if you buy off them, they will let you trade your chains or roof racks when you upgrade.

Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

I would have thought clearance on the rears would be ok for chains? A bit tight on the front.

Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

Just came off Buller here in Vic and know of at least two CRD GC's that are stuck up there due to fuel issues. Appears the alpine diesel sold here in Vic is only rated to -3 or at best -4 and we have had overnight and some daytime temps down to -7 and -8. Appears the fuel has solidified in the fuel lines.

I was lucky and left my car off mountain so not such an issue. That being said, I believe it wasn't just the jeeps that were struggling, many of the other models also had problems.

Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

That's interesting, here's some reading on it:

http://www.caltex.com.au/FPL%20PDS/W...l%20Blends.pdf

Sounds like you would want to take some anti-freeze additive, rather than only relying on the Alpine Diesel.

edit: something like this:

Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

The other thing to watch is that you want to fill as much of your tank as possible with the Alpine blend, if it is half full from another source, then the Alpine blend is being watered down considerably.
