I think that is the first pic of a JGC in Australian snow.
Looks at home.

Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

Looks great in Aussie snow! I'd love to play in the snow one day.

Question: Do you still need chains in "Snow" mode or is that a thing of the past?

It was that cold up here the weekend before last that I thought we'd get a snowflake or 2. The heated steering wheel and seats worked a treat. I didn't think I'd have much use for those luxuries in sub-tropical Brisbane!

Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

The "snow " mose is not a replacement for chains or snow tires. It certainly is a help, but not a full replacement.

Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

Interestingly enough, I checked both the RTA in NSW and Vic Roads websites and both state that 4WD's don't require chains to be carried or installed as is the case for a 2WD vehicle.

VICROADS - Four-wheel drive vehicles can generally travel further in the snow than two-wheel drive vehicles and depending on the conditions, signs generally exempt them from fitting chains.

NSW - Although excluded from the requirements to carry and fit chains, Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) recommends that persons driving 4WD vehicles (which include off-road vehicles, all wheel drive vehicles and sports utilities), except those fitted with winter tyres, carry snow chains and fit them when directed.

Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised with the level of drive and safety/security experienced last Sunday morning and it was the heaviest I have been in and at no time did I feel like I needed them. Moreso felt I needed them the previous weekend in mud, but that will be fixed when i put some decent tyres on in the future.

Re: In Aus, and used Snow Mode

Driving on snow is not difficult, until an unskilled snowplough driver skims the snow too shallow. When that occurs, it forms the thin packed layer forms ice. That is the killer. Unless you have someting that will dig into the ice, you are going only where momentum and gravity take you.
In Europe, they now lay grit on the surface which give you some traction.
A skilled snowplough driver will leave at least 60-80mm snow, allowing you to get traction.
