Read the GIO PDS very carefully. If they can't get you the same make and model within 90 days they will replace it with a similar make and model. I would also check with them if you still have the option to be paid out if you are not happy with the new car they want to give you.

I personally would stick to an agreed value policy. Car damaged = fixed. Written off = Cash. I couldn't be bothered arguing with them that the car they are replacing it with is a different color, different sized wheels etc. and really nothing is similar to a Jeep especially the way the insurance company will think of it which is $$$. Which is why I purchased a Jeep in the first place, there is no other make with the same features for the same $$

By the way I work for an insurance company in sales (not GIO though)

Re: Insurance Rip Off

There wasn't a 90 day drought of GCs from MY13 to MY14, and that was the longest stretch of no stock, so it won't be an issue getting a Limited at any point within 90 days.

Very weird, originally we didn't bother listing me as a driver as I will be barely driving it.
The person I was doing it on the phone said less than 24 trips per year don;t bother.
Then remembered that I do the odd weekend trip more often than I remember.
So I just added myself as a driver and the premium went down.

It is now $791.40 which I pay monthly, so now $65.95 per month.
Great stuff.

So, I got online and got a quote using a different address. Long story short I ended up getting 3 separate online quotes from AAMI using the exact same details each time except for the address.
For the address of my next door neighbours on each side was approx $700 each. But for my address with the exact same details the online price was approx $1500. WTF!!!!!!
Rang them today and they had all the excuses under the sun, but none were remotely plausible. Needless to say they wouldn't reduce the premium on my renewal notice (yet).

Anyone dealt with this before?

You think insurance a rip of, next time you want to get a quote, try using our post code 0870 in Alice Springs, our insurance here is outrageous to every where else that I can find.. i.e AAMI with my 2014 Overland (still getting built) with full no claim bonus with comprehensive is nearly $989.66 a year with all our discounts for safe driver and we have everything else insured with them.. and my current 2011 Mitsubishi Pajero that I own is nearly $1800 insured with TCIS. Seriously WTF!!!

I just did. I used the exact same details for my old Woolworths quote that gave me a premium of $881 for where I live in Sydney.
So Limit Kms to 15,000, Excess $600, windscreen replacement and 20 days of hire car.
I chose 5 Kekwick Ave as my address.
Sydney - $881
Alice - $784

Yep, I had the top rating with AAMI, full no claim bonus, no accidents for over 10 years, etc, etc. Sounds like they are pulling the same BS on you as they did with me...

I'll revive an old thread here. Starting to look at insurance quotes, woolies is one of the worst, limit to 10,000kms (I normally do 7k a year) $600 excess and 10 day hire car is it $1127. The best I can get for my address is Allianz $853.

I have the cruiser insured with RACQ, I think it is about $600, they quote $1012 for the GC. OUCH! Maybe I should move to Alice?

Re: Insurance Rip Off

Just did a couple quick insurance comparisons and on a Laredo with Quadralift and Off road GroupII down here in Tas we are looking at $500-$670

Wife just told me insurance is one of the things we save on down here in Tas....everything else costs us double.

Re: Insurance Rip Off

Be careful taking on insurance from the dealer. We just had a claim. Turns out the company we signed up to two years ago is not the same one we are now with.
The dealer has his own "insurance Company" as soon as you claim you are shunted off the the real insurer and they are dodgy brothers extrordinair.
It has take 9 weeks to get the car fixed, They tried to write it off twice and lowball the payout. We took it to a repairer of our choice and the quote was half the "quote" they had. The game is to high side the repairs, lowside the value. Pay you out and sell the car as a repairable writeoff.
Moral of the story. NRMA pays up when you have a crash. Go to a proper insurer and pay the premium. That is if you want to be properly insured.

Re: Insurance Rip Off

Hmm, can't justify almost doubling my insurance bill, particularly since I've never made a claim, and don't plan to.

Cheapest I've found so far is AAMI with $1150 excess and hire car option for $721.

I asked the dealer to give me some insurance quotes, but they haven't got back to me. Not too keen on that idea anyway, as per your problems.

Re: Insurance Rip Off

I'm also a little concerned about being covered for off road use. RACQ tell me I am covered on gazetted roads, but I have read stories from RACQ customers that they weren't fully covered when making claims on such roads. I'm going to get a quote from TCIS, if I have to pay $1k a year for insurance I'd like to know I'm fully covered.

I did find this on the AAMI site:
Off road driving | AAMI
Quote:
AAMI’s policy will cover your car while it is being driven off-road. However, please note that AAMI anticipates that the driver takes reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of the car.
There are a number of restrictions under AAMI’s Comprehensive Car Insurance Policy. You are not covered for the following:
  • If your car was in an un-roadworthy condition
  • If your car was being used in, or being tested in preparation for, a race, contest, trial, test, hill climb or any motor sport;.
  • if your car was being used on a competition race track, competition circuit, competition course or competition arena unless;
    - your car was being driven as part of a driver education course that did not involve speeds in excess of 100km/h or the timing of cars; or
    - you have told us about this use of your car and we have agreed to cover you.
  • Any additional loss or damage to your car as a result of it being driven after an accident unless we are satisfied you were not reasonably aware this could lead to further damage to your car.
