Our vehicle went straight to Exhaust Filter 100% full, then limp mode, no warnings before hand. Most journeys are long Highway ones, with 16500 kms on clock, built 4/2013, Laredo. Tried to drive it out of Limp mode with no success. Used a heap of fuel = 10.3 lts/100kms when only doing a maxium of 78kms flat too floor, no power at all. It has had forced burn + ECU upgrade done yesterday. Got it back today , gears are jumping badly when you floor it , hoping it will settle down once its got some kms on it . Oil temp not working at first, showing <50 + red marking each side while driving. Stopped /started now working again. Motors working fine - reving out.

Has anyone kept track of the models with problems? Eg, Laredo, Limited or Overland. Wonder if its confined to specific models?

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

For you guys that have been dealing with this down under, could you answer a few questions.

I am in the US and my diesel went into "filter 100% full - visit dealer" limp mode just after two days of in-town driving.

1: Is the only option to visit the dealer? If I try and run it fast in limp mode, will it never auto-regen and kick out of limp mode?

2: How exactly does a dealer fix a full filter? Do they force override the limp mode and somehow get the exhaust up to temp to burn off the particles?

3: Will the car ever leave a person stranded with this filter issue? Or is "limp mode" the furthest it will degrade?

1. The only way to force a regen is to visit the dealer. Running it in limp mode too much is said to possibly damage the engine

2. The dealer uses their diag tool to set the computer into regen mode. It will run at 2500rpm (I think) for about 15-20mins, pushing diesel into the dpf to heat it up. Under the car gets quite hot, and alot of smelly gases are released. Often they do this outside, but watch that nothing flammable is under the car when performing. They should know this.

3. Limp mode should always keep you going, it shouldn't degrade from there, but obviously you don't want to be on a highway or battling traffic in limp mode. I guess if you ran in limp mode too long, with lots of backpressure in the exhaust system the engine could cut out. But I haven't heard of that happening.

There is a TSB for dpf issues, it doesn't apply to Oz, but it may apply to you.

Hi Zybane,

1: Yes. No one has successfully managed to clear the situation by "driving at highway speeds" despite attempts to do so.

2: Yes. The manual burn uses additional fuel delivery to heat the exhaust.

3: Unknown I guess, but there have been no reports of total shut down. That said, I believe that the urea system in NA vehicles will do this, so it's possible that differences exist. Personally, I wouldn't drive too far in limp mode unless under duress.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

Thanks guys for the info. I hadn't realized buying this vehicle this DPF would be such an annoyance. I guess I will see if the dealer can fit me in tomorrow in the morning. Nothing like wasting an entire morning on this crap (if they even fit me in).

I think you guys in NA would be mentally disturbed by the lack of support over here! Check the TSB referred to by Benn0... it's in this thread... it may address your problems. Down here we're still waiting for a guaranteed fix to be made available.

All the best,
Steve

As has been discussed previously, most modern diesels seem to have bugs with their dpfs. They are a common point of failure.

BTW I have been following your build thread, but the pics have gone missing. Do you have any you can post?

Good luck with your dpf issues. Here is another thread I found with someone else having this issue in the states:
