Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

We have clocked up a total so far of 2,000 klms towing our 2.9 Tonne Futuresystem caravan with our new Laredo.
Our (all towing) average is just a whisker over 13 litres per hundred klms, fully confirmed by my calculations at time of filling. I know I could do better in flat country, if I watched my speed a bit more.

Verdict on the new Tug so far?
10/10, absolutely delighted. Not a squeak, not a rattle, not a squawk, totally delighted with everything.
I think it did a regen at about 300 klms on the clock (before any towing), with an otherwise inexplicable increase in instantaneous fuel consumption for a while on the highway, (though no messages), probably as a result of delivery idling etc. No hint since then of any regen or of any DPF issues.
Early days yet, but delighted so far.

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

Hey guys and gals,
I have been searching through your forum endless times in search of some info regarding the issues with my 2013 build Limited Diesel.. I am astounded to see that I'm not alone! So I've decided to join .

The first time our Jeep went into limp mode was not long after we had returned from a 4 hr drive to Whitsundays. I'm not entirely sure whether this had anything to do with the issue, but I feel like it certainly plays a part somewhere.. My wife drives the car daily for 20-25mins on the highway at 100km's each way to work everyday. so I figured that would be a great burn off period! The msg that was displayed what something like "Exhaust filter nearing full, drive at highway speeds to remedy". (wife was driving) next time she jumped in the car it was locked into 4th gear.

Upon returning from work a few days later I took the car in to Jeep service centre and they were quite happy to fix it, and knew what the issue was. I was bombarded with a horde of Q/S's in relation on how we drive, where to, what fuel do we use etc etc.. I started to think maybe this is a manufacturing issue with all these problems!?! (and just adding to the list of issues, the cruise control only works sparingly, and the aircon also has a mind of its own on some occasions.)

When I returned to pick the car up, I was told the cruise/aircon wasn't fixed, as they had been having problems with the DPF! they asked to keep the car over the wk end to continue work (Mothers Day wk end mind you) which I said No too. They said they could force a regen, which I agreed too. When I finally got the car, the service advisor then told me that this was in no doubt going to happen AGAIN, and they couldn't tell me when, or even replace the filter.

The car at that stage had about 6500 km's, and now has about 8800km's.

I really hope we don't have this issue again, as I do love this car..
sorry for the rant!
thanks for reading!

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

Is your car a 2013 built MY14?

In some cases performing a manual regen does fix the problem, but SOME owners have seen the problem re-occur after a manual regen.

With the amount of highway driving you do it should be triggering an automatic regen during one of these trips, but some owners have found that even when the car tells them it wants to perform a regen and they drive at highway speeds, it doesn't work.

Some owners have had to get the filter replaced, but there has also been a technical advisory released on this issue, which involves a software update to make the car perform the regen correctly.

There have been differing responses from dealers about whether this TSB applies or not, but worth raising with them.

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

Thanks for your reply! Yes, it is a October Built 2013 MY14 Limited. Sadly, over the long weekend we have suffered another DPF Limp mode.. My wife was driving at highway speeds when the message "Exhaust filter nearing full, drive at highway speeds to remedy" again. she was coming up to a red light, and when she took off again it was locked in 4th. I have been on the phone to the service department again, but no one wants to call me back - or give me any answers.

Ok, well if it has re-occurred shortly after a manual regen I'd be asking them to replace it. It can be quite a wait for a replacement.

Thanks for the advice - As soon as someone calls me back I will be asking for the filter to be ordered and replaced. I shall keep the forum updated with any news.

Dean2, something I have learnt after our second "limp mode" is always just ring Jeep Assist and let them get it to the dealer for you. They know the problem and will get a tow truck to get it there for you, they had to get mine 1600km back to Perth to the dealer to do the regen and then ship it back again. Next thing I learnt from the dealer is it needs to have the oil and filter changed out after the regen as it is all contaminated. When it does come up saying "Exhaust filter nearing full, drive at highway speeds to remedy" use the paddles and bring it down a couple of gears to get the Revs up over 2500rpm to get more heat into it, and if you have to slow down keep dropping gears to keep the revs up. mine has done it twice, seemingly at around every 4500km, after the last time the dealer said it should not happen again, I have less that 1000km to go till the next 4500km is up and we will see. If it happens again I want a new filter this time as they do wear out eventually and are not cheap.

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

Thankyou all for the information supplied about the DPF issue over the past few months. I'm now ready to visit a few Stealerships and place an order on a JGC next month. I really want the CRD, but noting the DPF problem with the CRD I may "have" to go with the 5.7 Hemi.

Anyhow just a few final questions if I may please?

1. If there was TSB recently released for the "CV Boot - Front Half Shafts Replacement", why wasn't there ever a TSB released for the CRD's "DPF issue"? Or did I simply miss it? and

2. I've noticed that the DPF issue really only concerns the MY14 models. Why weren't the MY13 models affected? Should Jeep have this (DPF issue) sorted for the MY15 models?

As always, I look forward to your responses. Cheers,

Marty

TSB for DPF issue:
http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_1801814b.pdf

It seems to me this issue mainly affected mid 2013 built cars, perhaps there was a quality issue with the sensors, or they changed something in the ECU programming. While this flash seems to be a fix for dpf failing to burn off, there have also been other DPF related failures where it seems that replacing the DPF was the solution. So in my mind there are multiple issues with the DPF, but it looks to me that both are fixable withe one or another method.

I don't think there have been any 2014 built cars that have had a dpf limp mode?????

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

Just gave you a "Thanks" Benn0, cheers mate

Regarding the MY14 & MY13, I forgot that those 2014 vehicles were built in 2013; I guess I'll never figure that "MY" thing out

Well I've made a decision and based on Jeep selling over 1,400 JGC a month (in Aust), and reading that there are a lot of CRD owners who have had no problems at all and who absolutely love the performance and economy of their CRDs, that there is a "fix" for this, and that this particular thread has gone quiet, ....I'm going to believe that the DPF issue only affects a minority of CRD owners out there. Therefore I'm going to roll the dice and go with the CRD when I order.

I really hope that is the right decision. It will be my first Diesel.

Thankyou one and all, I hope to get involved with other (positive) discussions after I eventually get into my new Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Cheers,

Marty

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

Yep, that was the conclusion I came to aswell. I/you could be unlucky and still be affected by this issue, or any other number of issues, but worrying about such things would be a boring way to live. If it happens, then that was a risk we knew could occur, if not then it is all good.
