Marty
And many of the MY13 vehicles were built in 2012, just to make it even more confusing. My MY13 Trailhawk - built in 2012, has had a couple of DPF incidents and Jeep Aus has replaced my DPF, so they do seem to be reacting well in this case - so go for it - the CRD is a brilliant engine.

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

I also have a 2014 JGG Diesel with 4,300 miles, and I got the message "Exhaust Filter Nearing Safely Drive at Highway Speeds to Remedy". Drove at highway speeds but regeneration did not occur. The vehicle went into limp mode and had to be towed 90 miles to the dealer. The dealer has the vehicle and the earliest he can look at it is 6 days later. I live in a small Alaskan town with little opportunity to drive at highway speeds, so I am extremely concerned about this issue reoccurring.

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

I had my Jeep serviced by JH the other day and was informed by the service manager that they no longer fill the oil to the full mark.
He claims that he hasn't had any DPF problems since they have started doing that and jokingly said there may be a recall for a new dipstick.

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

Hopefully this doesn't increase the chances of an engine shut down due to low oil detection. This has occurred on steep off-road gradients as per a few reports so far, including from Wade here in WA. Could be nasty in the wrong situation.

If the fill level is to be reduced, I'd suggest that the low oil sensor will also require attention.

Cheers,
Steve

Deadly serious about filling under the full mark. Many vehicles over the years have had the oil levels altered to what is on the dipstick.
I think the remark about the recall on the dipstick was a bit tongue in cheek though.

Wasn't there something about the Nissan Patrol altering their dipstick to alter the oil level to fix an issue. I think they increased the level though.

Elvin

I'd just be interested in the link between oil level and DPF issues and how that works.

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

I guess if the oil is too high, it could cause the crankshaft to hit the oil and foam it up. This could then cause the Crankcase ventilation valve to release heavier oil vapor to the intake system, burning the oil in the combustion and sending soot to the DFP.
It is plausible, but you would think they could have picked this up in testing before they released so many cars.

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

I could imagine that if the dipstick shaft is not fully inserted into the block that overfilling would occur. I don't know how it's implemented on the VM Motori... is the dipstick shaft just hammered into the block like in the old days?

Yeah, maybe, these things do have a pretty weird looking sump so who knows. Some oils are more prone to foaming then others. From memory the shape of the sump (and capacity) did change for the MY 14s.

I can just imagine a TSB where Jeep specify replacing the dip stick. Dealer interpretation: Cut half inch off the top of the dip stick tube with hacksaw. Repeat process every time a DPF issue is reported.

Re: Is DPF issue for 2014 CRD fixed now?

Producing more soot isn't the issue, the inability to perform a regen is the problem. The manual says:

NOTE: It is possible for your oil level to be slightly
higher than a previous check. This would be due to diesel
fuel that may temporarily be in the crankcase due to
operation of the diesel particulate filter regeneration
strategy. This fuel will evaporate out under normal
operation.

I wonder if having a higher oil level interferes with the post injection process in some way, and prevents the exhaust temps from increasing.

Also:

Your vehicle is equipped with an advanced technology
Diesel Engine and an emission device designed
to limit Diesel Particulate Emissions from being
released into the atmosphere. The durability of your
engine and life expectancy of this diesel particulate
filter emission device is highly dependent on the use
of the correct engine oil.
