Jeep Navigation System = "Fail"

Hello Everyone

Please use this thread to post all of your Jeep Navigation System Fail examples.

I think that it would be good to put them all in one place.

Today we went on a day trip from Oakford to Hoddy's Well Archery centre that is near Toodyay.

1st photos are of the Nav system heading North on Tonkin Highway and needing to turn right (East) onto Roe Highway. The Jeep Nav System has us turn left onto Roe Highway, travel a couple of Kilometres West, Do a U-Turn then head back East past where we could have easily turned right. Note that this intersection an ability to turn right has been there probably about 15 years.

The next photo has the Jeep Nav System telling us repeatedly to do U-turns to get off Toodyay Road, even though this is the shortest route to get there. Note that Toodyay road has been there probably longer than I have. Note the time to destination is 1Hr and 13 minutes. We were actually less than 15 minutes away from our destination at that time.

End result is that we certainly got their OK and had great fun. Thankfully we were not relying on the Jeep Nav System otherwise we would have expended much more travel time.

Quite Simply: Jeep Navigation System = "Fail".

Up til now everyone at Jeep has played dumb about the GPS problem. No-one has admitted that they know of a problem. Apparently the staff have been sworn to silence when it comes to dealing with owners.
Something's changed because now the Melbourne people are speaking more freely about the long-awaited fix and even the dealer staff admit that there are a lot of other Overland owners waiting for the CDs to be delivered.
Had dealings with a lass named Shona in Melbourne. Typical of PR folk, she promises faithfully to ring back with progress reports but doesn't actually make the phone call. Obviously she's not high enough up the corporate tree to have any real information. Sometimes, just for a moment I actually feel sorry for those customer support operators who have to take our phone calls, because they're obliged to tell lies in order to keep their jobs. But then I remember that I'm the one who spent the 80 grand, and I'm the one treated like a mushroom, and the sympathy disappears.
We'll win, even if I have to pay my solicitor more money, we'll win, and then we'll have a GPS somewhat like what you can get in a spare parts store.

We will just have to keep trying - I still haven't been able to get any sense from the service desk when I ask why the MY13 models have been excluded from the upgrade. Once someone with an MY12 is finally able to get his radio updated we will know if the update is worth having - then the lawyers will be involved.

I had the NAV system tell me to turn off a road when the destination was straight ahead of me in SIGHT!!! I always use my PC to map out a route using Bing, Mapquest, or Google maps then program it into the GC but it often takes me a different way! Is there a way to look up the same route that the GC will take me on a PC?

#255 ·
If you look back at the early posts in this thread, you will see that even with hte world's largest supercomputer, there is no way to simulate the totally crap routing which is currently programmed into the MY11, 12 and 13 nav units. I'm not sure of the situation with the MY14 models, sounds like something similar though.

Have just booked my GC in for a 20,000 / 12 month service and the upgrade.
I went in to the dealership armed with the TSB and an Ipad with a video of the navigation system routing 513 Klms from Canberra to Bateman's Bay (111Klm) that I got off Youtube.

For the first time in my numerous dealings with Jeep:-
1. Yes they knew of the problem
2. Yes they have the disk version 4.3.1
3. Yes we can do the upgrade on Friday.

Lets hope it works and the only other time I ever return to this thread is to post that fact on this site.

Outcome of the upgrade.
My Jeep was given its 20,000 klm service but unable to load update as my 2012 Jeep for some reason is not listed on the vin numbers that need it. Will be interested how "allpally" went today with his upgrade and if it actually worked.
Jeep have opened another case number on my car however I am now ready to talk class action with anyone interested and am also about to send the link to this thread and a Youtube video to A Current Affair.

What I find staggering is that they wait for you to turn up at the dealership before they check to see if your vin is in the list, so no chance to fix while you are there. My dealer did the same to me after I had driven 170k for the sole purpose of having the update done. If nothing positive comes from Allpally's visit, it is definitely time for the lawyers.

There is presently a case in the Tribunal in the ACT re the known faulty GPS. The preliminary mediation hearing is next week. If there can be no agreement by all parties, the matter proceeds to a judge.

I suggest you contact your state Dept of Fair Trade and begin lodging as it takes time for the application to be lodged, right of reply by Jeep and proceeding to mediation. You may also seek a refund for the cost of the unit, your time in negotiating with Jeep for a fix, your travel costs being cents per km as per ATO rate, your time to drive for the fix etc

Your state's consumer dept will give you guidance. Use them. While we do nothing, Jeep continues to treat customers badly. If enough people take action, lodge claims, expose the lies eg a fix will be available in two weeks - the sooner Jeep may take their obligations to Australian consumers seriously.

I agree with above - lodge a complaint with DFT. I don't have Nav but I went through the DFT process for some other matters and had rectifications to my jeep carried out to the tune of around 3 grand. I didn't need to go to the tribunal as I got an early agreement with jeep but it seems to me to be an easy process. Initial complaint lodgment is easy - all on line.

Instead of posting here - lodge a complaint with DFT. The more that do the better for all.

Well, had the supposed "fix" today.
Dealer confirmed installs went OK with no errors. The result was as follows
Text Electronics Display device Font Technology

However, I ran a small test to confirm whether I could notice any changes.
I ran a trip, from Sydney to Tuncurry.
The image below shows with a red line what the Jeep system routed, when selecting the "shortest route"
The green line shows the actual shortest, and most logical route.
Map Text Line Screenshot World

From what I can see, the upgrade has made no positive impact in the way the system is performing, it still wants to add a further 10's of klms on the trip.
I truly doubt if Jeep Aust have the mentality to objectively look at the issue and come up with a viable solution. A $150 device will easily out perform the $,000's of system that Jeep have come up with.

#265 ·
Run a few more test than that Alan. There are several routes my stand alone GPS units with full update less than 6 months old still screw up.
Giving routes that make no sense if you know the roads, but are done as the roads are a little larger in size.
See if it still just makes plane stupid, wildly crazy routes like your YouTube video.

Lots of people get lost following current GPS models silly route guides.

I'd go by The Lakes Way myself....

Just thought I would add another anecdote to the recent "fix"
Returning from Wollongong to Sydney (heading north) last weekend. Turned on the Nav clicked the TAKE ME HOME, and halfway up Mt Ousley, the system blurted out "MAKE a U TURN", which would have had me going south again. Thought for a second that maybe I had moved home without knowing it?
Can't recall if I paid more than $2 for this system. If I did, I was ripped off. It truly has to be the worst performing navigation system in the universe.

Was booked in this morning for the update after being told they had the disk. No prizes for guessing but after taking time off work to get it done disk not for my Vin. Now told it will be here next month. Another call to Chrysler now to update case. Absolutely useless.

#270 ·
That is weird.
From what I have learnt, each dealer gets 1 disk. That disk is good for all MY111, and MY12's.
The way the process works is, dealer gets your car and inserts disk. Install program displays your VIN. Dealer phones Navteq and supplies the VIN, and Navteq respond with a code. Dealer inputs that code, and program does the install.

So from what others are telling me the "fix" is a dud, so I spent $149 on a Garmin 2597 today to do the job of the useless Jeep Navigation System. Free lifetime maps, lane guidance, add your own Points of Interest and way points, etc, etc, etc.
Loaded up Camp 7 (try that on the Jeep system) and I am now ready to go on my next Caravan trip.
Oh yeah, one other thing. Bunnings is now 6 Klms away not 3300 Klms.

#272 ·
With the rate that bunnings are being built I'm pretty sure everyone has one 6km away. So your Garmin might be just guessing.

#274 ·
Well my dealer rang me yesterday and told be the disk hadn't arrived. Now the dealer acknowledges that they're being treated as mushrooms too. Shona is now permanently unavailable. I'm sure now there is no fix, all the stories have just been delaying tactics in the hope that Overland owners will lose interest and buy alternate GPS devices.
I believe under Australian consumer law a purchased item has to work as described or the customer is entitled to a refund. I'm going to ask for a refund.

#275 ·
Latest report. I've been to the dealer and suggested that the time has come to move on to the next step. It's obvious that Chrysler Jeep Australia have no intention of addressing this problem. The service staff can't give us any sensible answers because they too are in the dark. So I've asked the management for
1. a fix, or if they can't fix it in a reasonable time
2. a replacement GPS, or if they can't fit a later model GPS into my dash then
3. a replacement dash or
4. if they can't do that then a replacement vehicle or
4. a refund of my purchase price.
This is how it would go if it was any other commodity so I can't see how cars can be treated any differently.
The manager expects to have some information for me by early next week. We'll see how long it takes before they realize there's a legitimate claim being made.

#276 ·
Worth reading for those taking legal action.
Anybody know the outcome of the mediation case last week? I would expect Jeep to demand confidentiality of any settlement but worth asking.
For what it's worth I believe a legal action or fair trading claim that was made on behalf of all of us would get a quicker result than numerous individual claims. Not sure if fair trading allows that or not.

You need to follow that post with this follow up report a few months ago after the VW debacle

Lax lemon laws drive VW owners to class action | carsguide.com.au

"The nation's peak consumer body - the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission ---- refused to confirm or deny whether a customer has received a full refund or a replacement vehicle since the tougher standards were introduced two years ago, despite refunds and replacement cars being commonplace overseas."

There was a member here who had a full refund over an unrelated matter after taking action. And yes - the terms were confidential.

Finally got the 2.184 update on my MY13 Overland but only after I got Tracy to intervene with the dealer that I would get the SW update but not the map update. And so far it seems to make no difference on local roads.

Would the map update make any difference - am not keen to shell out $220 just to try it
