I was a bit surprised when i dropped the diff oil in our 2012 at 40K and found the oil in both was a bit dark and smelly - not burnt, but not pristine either.
I refilled with Redline 75W90.
At 80K I dropped the oil again and although a bit dark, it wasn't as smelly as at 40K.
As the vehicle is constant 4wd and we tow 2.3 ton regularly my feeling is that both diffs are hard working, and they do get pretty hot.
The cost of changing the diff oil is small biccies compared to the overall picture and not a hard job to do yourself if you really want to save money.
I'll maintain the 40K change on our 2015, based on our circumstances and experience.

John

Thanks for that John. It would seem a reasonable rule of thumb might be, change diff oil at 40k if having towed and 80k if not.

Re: Jeep service costs

I had just booked my car in for the 40k service at a local dealer. They informed me they have updated there service schedules and the axles don't need a oil change to 80k.

When I enquired 2 weeks ago the were still on the old service schedule. Ill check the fluids myself anyway just to be sure.

I had my 40k service a week ago snd both diffs were done by dealer. Saved $600 after I told them I wanted the Mopar fixed price service.

Re: Jeep service costs

The Mopar website service menu now shows diff oil to be changed at 80k.

My next service is 80k but I had the diff oil changed at 40k.

So that will be fun when I book in for my next service....

Confusion - situation normal.

Does this mean you just got $600 less servicing? I hope not but I'm sceptical about anything dealers do.

I hope not too. I should probably check they actually changed my diff fluids...

Re: Jeep service costs

Just remember there's an additive required for electronic limited slip diffs. My service centre forgot to add it. Only after I mentioned it (thanks to this forum) was it rectified - some weeks later.

Re: Jeep service costs

Do you remember Snuke's story where he didn't want the car washed, so he put a note on the dashboard? Yep... they still washed the car, and poorly at that.

I think the brief could be tattooed on the back of their spanner hand, and it'd still get done the wrong way!

Cheers,
Steve

Well, what would you expect?
They probably don't use spanners, just a universal shifter, and hammer.
