Its a tradeoff between air flow and filter efficiency.

I am wondering, with the above in mind, what aftermarket air filters are people using? Are you happy with it? Have you had any problems?

I use a Wesfil one. Quality of the paper filter looks the same as Jeep. Bonus is that the rubber doesn't split.

I don't know about McCarrols in Newcastle but I would never go back to McCarrols Toyota in Waitara. They charged me for an oil drain plug that didn't need replacing and probably wasn't. Drove the car home an promptly got a puncture from a screw they left lying in their yard but they of course denied responsibility.

Re: Jeep service costs

FWIT, here is an article about where car servicing is going. I expect it will be while before we get this sort of thing here in Oz.

Yep, I ran through several in our 2012, never any issue. I usually swap out the air and cabin filters any time after 20,000k, depending on what has been breathed in. Not expensive by my reckoning.
In fact all the spare filters carried on board are Wesfil, more than happy.

Re: Jeep service costs

Dealers be damned. I last serviced the MY12 myself in June 2014. I reset the oil changer indicator and left it to the car to tell me when it wanted the oil changed. It just now came on some 18,000km later. Mind you, I was getting worried that it was working at all but there it was quietly beavering away doing what it is supposed to do. I guess it was working on a 20,000km schedule but detected that I did some towing and off-roading so discounted it to about 18,000km. I love this engine. It has saved four 6-monthly dealer visits. As a Chrissy present, I'll give it a proper service now, reset the oil change indicator then take it to the dealers to update the software and do a couple of recall fixes. Then just sit back and enjoy and wait till the CRD asks for another service. In the mean time, the dealer's letters are going straight into the bin.

Re: Jeep service costs

The upgraded software and EVIC in our 2015 Laredo now provides a visual of the oil life - after 1100k of round town it reads 98%.

Good friends with a diesel Touareg and others with a BMW X5 only have their vehicles serviced according to the indicator (seems to fit with dealer policy) and these often get 20K+.

Pretty sure that CJD vehicles in Australia have the most severe service schedule anywhere in the world - and its not because of the conditions they operate in!

Just went to WK2Jeeps where I should have gone in the first place….no info relating to the diesel - but this for the petrol……and a little note that says for export vehicles the indicator system is disabled - it wasn't on our 2012!

"Schedules A and B have long been a part of required and recommended maintenance on Chrysler Group vehicles. One drawback of using these schedules is that customers sometimes end up making a best "guesstimate" of the correct maintenance interval.

With the introduction of the Oil Change Indicator system, that's going to change - customers are automatically notified via the cluster or EVIC that an oil change is required. In addition, the system does away with Schedules A and B and instead combines both into easy-to-use lists and tables.

The Oil Change Indicator system uses the Powertrain Control Module to process a variety of inputs and then decides on an oil change interval. The factors which point toward severe use include the following:

Ambient temperature inputs which indicate extended periods of low temperature operation
Average vehicle speeds which indicate stop-and-go driving
Run time which indicates prolonged idling
Trip lengths and coolant temperatures which indicate short trips
Engine RPM and engine loads which indicate trailer tow usage
Fuel indications of an ethanol percentage of 60 percent or greater
The system cannot keep track of dusty conditions or time elapsed since the last maintenance. In fact, it is possible for the maximum allowable maintenance time interval to elapse without an oil change reminder. In such a case, it is the owner's responsibility to ensure that maintenance is performed according to the recommended interval.

Based on the inputs, at a fixed number of miles since the last reset, the Powertrain Control Module decides on the severity of the operating conditions. If one or more of the conditions indicates severe use, the PCM sends a message over the bus so that the appropriate message can be displayed. If the PCM decides that the normal service interval applies, it waits until additional mileage has accumulated before sending out the request for a message."

Re: Jeep service costs

A bit annoyed at the large variations of servicing costs throughout Perth, rang three dealers regarding a 60k service and two came back with a $500 to $ 600 price with one offering a free loan car and the third one I ended up using only charged $295 and I supplied my own oil. When I questioned about the price difference the service dept told me there was a memo from Jeep saying that the transmission oil does not need replacing till 160k kilometres or if there is a leak, why didn't the other dealers know this or were they just after the $$$$$'s. Don't they know people will price check especially when it comes down to the sometimes high servicing costs. Really love my 2012 JGC it's the best car I have owned, fantastic economy from the diesel when towing or just driving around and 1150 klm range on one tank when not towing I am really happy with that.

Question Re: Jeep service costs

A family member just brought a new Pajero why ??? with its outdated 4cyl engine, but because of the Jeep bias that will always be evident missed out on getting a Jeep with more than what the Pajero offered and could of spent the same $$$'s. But that's another topic. Why is it that Pajero serving is 12 months or 15000 kilometres, yet my Jeep has to be done every 10000 or six months, sometimes I only can only manage 5k or less then I am up for another service to keep my warranty valid. Three services now I have been 6-7k under the scheduled service klms ???. Can I operate only on the service indicator when my warranty expires.

Re: Jeep service costs

Hmmm, don't see anything about trans oil change in the mopar menu service tool:
Engine Oil$159.14
Engine Oil Filter$80.90
Sump Plug Washer$4.15
Air Conditioning Filter$76.97
Windscreen Washer Fluid$1.65
Sundries$39.07
Labour Amount$165.60
TOTAL (inc GST) $527.48

Leave out the cost of the oil and the aircon filter and it will be about what you were charged.

More modern diesel motor may be a reason. You can do oil changes whenever you like, really comes down to the condition of the oil. You can get the oil tested if you like, but cars with turbos I always like to change more often. I used to change the oil in my VL turbo every 5k.

Washed, polished and detailed the inside and ever glossed up the tyres a couple of days before my scheduled service and when I dropped off the car for its service it looked immaculate. When I picked it up it had been hosed over and must of been dried with the dirtiest chamois ever, had to tell the dealer service manager to put on file never to detail my car after a service as I could do a 100% better and why couldn't they see that the car was in showroom condition and didn't need hosing. Surely the time could of been spent elsewhere??? in their workshop.
