As I said above, I let my CRD go till the oil change indicator came on and that was after 18,000km. The oil and oil filter were black as one would expect if they were doing their job of washing the engine but to the naked eye, there was absolutely no trace of gunk on the filter. I recon it could have gone twice as far.

But that's another topic. Why is it that Pajero serving is 12 months or 15000 kilometres, yet my Jeep has to be done every 10000 or six months, sometimes I only can only manage 5k or less then I am up for another service to keep my warranty valid. Three services now I have been 6-7k under the scheduled service klms ???. Can I operate only on the service indicator when my warranty expires.
Of course you can, You could have even gone by your service indicator within your warranty period. The dealer will say no but they have no argument that will stand up in court. The manufacture has deliberately put in a sophisticated device to tell the end user when a service is required. The dealer is just the guy that sold you the car. Despite JEEP being displayed in large letters on the dealer's premises, the link to the manufacturer is tenuous at best.

Bigskiddy is on a distinguished road
So what is the concensus on the transmission oil change?

Book says at 50k. Jeep online servicing says 160k (from memory).

Leave out the cost of the oil and the aircon filter and it will be about what you were charged.
Mention of the sump plug washer above prompted me to add this for all you DIY'ers out there. If you are anything like me, the humble little sump plug washer is often overlooked and one finds oneself racing around to find one as the oil still drips out of the engine. Even at the dealers one gets a quizzical look like, "Why bother me with something worth a couple of bucks. We just use the old ones.". So I got myself as good supply. You can worry about Mopar part numbers if you like but they are nothing more than a standard metric M18 copper sealing washer. They are 18mm ID, 22mm OD and 1.5mm thick. I bought a pack of 10 from Advanced Fluid Solutions in the UK for $19.06 including freight. So that's $1.90 against the dealer's $4.15. OK, the cost is difference is peanuts but at least I have a good supply for a while.

Try this Copper Washer 18mm x 22mm M18 Metric Sealing Ring

BTY, here is a great little youtube clip about the benefit of oil management systems albeit it's on GM cars but the principle is the same, I think:

When I questioned about the price difference the service dept told me there was a memo from Jeep saying that the transmission oil does not need replacing till 160k kilometres or if there is a leak, why didn't the other dealers know this or were they just after the $$$$$'s. Don't they know people will price check especially when it comes down to the sometimes high servicing costs. Really love my 2012 JGC it's the best car I have owned, fantastic economy from the diesel when towing or just driving around and 1150 klm range on one tank when not towing I am really happy with that.

160k transmission oil change would be for the new ZF's, not the 5 speed that I expect your 2012 to have. Me thinks that your dealer is confused.

Re: Jeep service costs

I would be somewhat cautious about relying solely on the oil light as a means to prompt oil changes.

How Oil Change Indicators Work - John's Auto Spa

Following good research by swampy I also use Blackstone Labs to chemically analyses how my oil is holding up. I could push for 15k km interval changes according to the results, but prefer 12k at this stage.

BobT thanks for the link for sump washer.

I'm impressed that you and Swampy are using Blackstones. It's clearly the ultimate. A fleet operator would be foolish not to use a lab. However, most of us are likely to dispose of our Jeeps long before the engine is anywhere near worn out. I mean, technology is so good these days, engine rebuilders have just about gone the way of the dodo. So it's really a matter of practicality and asset life cost/benefit for the individual.

BTW, on checking the air filter yesterday, I found a roll of insulating tape lying in bottom of the plenum box among some leaves and sand. I was wondering where it had gotten to. I must have placed it on the plastic shrouding and it dropped down the air intake. Note to self: look out for snakes in the plenum box when next checking the air filter.

Re: Jeep service costs

A reminder for those wanting to use the oil change indicator function, the method of resetting the indicator as stated in the manual, doesn't work, at least not on my car. I have an MY12 CRD. The manual method talks of pressing the accelerator pedal 3 times in 10 seconds. Maybe there is a trick to it but I've never got it to work. However, there is another method that has worked for me every time. Thanks to Fulvio75 for pointing this out, see:
How do I reset the oil change indicator?
Set the ignition to RUN, hold the accelerator pedal down for at least 30sec then press the brake pedal 6 times. At that point you should see the indicator go off. Take feet off the pedals and switch off.

Anyway, of course Fulvio75 would know this, he lives in Milano about 200km from the VM Motori factory.
