yes. It is confusing. It's not until you google the codes that all is revealed.

Jeep service costs

Something looks odd with the transfer case oil cost. $120 for 2 litres of ATF+4 that is the same oil as used in the auto transmission. Maybe there is a labour component mixed up in this.

Re: Jeep service costs

I think the $120 covered the labour, and the 7 ltrs of ATF+4 covered both transmission and diff. I could be wrong as I have not looked up the fluid capacities.

When questioned why the transmission was not part of the fixed price, I was told that Jeep Aust had changed the scheduling for the transmission so it was no longer a p[art of that service. Mind you, the Jeep Aust website still shows these as part of that service.
I know why the transmission oil change was not part of the fixed price servicing. It's because it simply wasn't necessary. Many modern gearboxes including the new 8-speeder, are fill for life. The 5-speeder is essentially the same thing. Even Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - Maintenance information and schedules says that for Service Interval A - 100,000 miles (160,000 km) and Service Interval B - 60,000 miles (97,000 km). Sure, technically the gearbox should last longer with more frequent oil changes but in practise, the increased risk of maintenance induced failures tends to outweigh the benefits.

Re: Jeep service costs

The condition of the old oil was not in that bad of condition according to the service guy. However, since I tow over 3 tonne, I thought it was a safe bet to change it. Mind you, with the new oil and filter, the gear changes are a lot smoother.

Re: Jeep service costs

Whenever you read something like "Fill for Life", interpret that as "As Long as the Warranty Period", because after that, they don't really care. If you want to keep the vehicle long term, find out what the component maker says.

This is a good read "Has the dealer told you that it does not need service for life? Who's life anyway?"

I completely agree! I had a Mazda CX-9 for a while, it had the "transfer case/power transfer unit" that was a sealed "filled for life" unit and it failed at 123,000 kms, although the problem started at 102,000 they couldn't fix it then and it eventually leaked and gave up the ghost... Very common problem on these cars, Mazda USA admitted the problem and extended the warranty to 5 years and some extra miles with a TSB on checking seals and such, Mazda Australia on the other hand washed their hands of it and said "outside warranty, bad luck".

Re: Jeep service costs

Just getting back to service costs, had my GC serviced using the dealer whom I purchased the car with. Booked the 20k service through the MOPAR using the fixed price service when I eventually invoice it was about $50 less. The only problem was when I got home and looked under the bonnet saw the air filter box was not sealed correctly, the power steering fluid below minimum, and they had not reset the oil life gauge. Contacted the service manager the next day and the items were problems were fixed the next day.

To follow on, I got the usual JA service survey and completed that with a "slightly" negative response and was contacted by the service dealer who has to do the next service free of charge. Wait and see.

So I'm totally confused.

The Mopar Service Menu for 50K does not include the diff fluids, so why did Tynan do it?

The NEW service book schedule on the FCA website (here : http://www.mopar.com.au/Pages/UserCo...d_FINAL_LR.pdf) has it due at 80K. The OLD service book schedule was at 40K.

My diffs had the fluids changed at 40k as per the OLD schedule. I'm now due for my 80K service. Is the dealer going to want to change the fluids again? My view is that as the fluids were changed at 40K, they should be fine until 120K.
