Re: Jeep service costs

Yep my JGC just turned over 40K also. Have done all the work myself except for diff oil change. Will get my local mechanic to do the diff oils and stamp the book.

Purchased 20 litres of GL5 75W-85 full synthetic cheaper than 1 litre from Jeep dealer.

My mechanic was quoted $126 per litre plus GST for the mopar oil.

It must be the most expensive liquid on the planet.

I'll retract that statement. I just noticed my wife's perfume collection.

There is no doubt in my mind that many, if not most of the service costs at Jeep dealers are pure extortion. Many people think they HAVE to use the dealer to maintain warranty.
WRONG

The work needs to be done properly, the log book needs to be stamped, but that can be with your local friendly mechanic, or anybody else suitably qualified.
Under Australian law they can't refuse a warranty claim simply because somebody other than them has done the work.
I refuse to pay some of the dealer prices- they're just pure extortion, period. One of my son's good friends is a service manager at the local Toyota dealer. I showed him some of the prices quoted here and elsewhere, for both prices and labour on standard services. He was appalled and said "How can they get away with that?"

They get away with it because people just pay it.

Much of my servicing is done elsewhere, and will continue to be done elsewhere in to the future, and any I get done at the dealers (if ever), will be quoted on first and many or all the parts and fluids will be sourced by me. If they don't like that, then they won't get the work.

I will in fact be doing more than the Jeep service log specifies- I'll do the diffs sooner than recommended first time round and will also have a new pan and fluid in the gearbox perhaps as early as 40,000 klms rather than "sealed for life", with the work done and recommended by a ZF gearbox expert on the Sunshine Coast. It certainly won't be the Jeep dealer doing it! (New gearboxes and diffs in any vehicle always generate quite a bit of metal during the running in process.)

Servicing your car at your dealer is not a licence for them to commit extortion.

Re: Jeep service costs

One problem I have is finding a good mechanic, so its often easier to just use the dealer (even though they don't seem any better). And another issue is getting updates applied.

edit: I had a bad experience using ultra tune once, they didn't understand these new self tensioning belts and totally stuffed up a belt change on the mazda. Had to take it to mazda to get it all sorted, it would have been easier to just get mazda to do it properly in the first place.....

Re: Jeep service costs

Like anything I have had mixed experiences with Ultratune. When I lived in Melbourne the one I used there was excellent. Work was done well, and priced brilliantly. The scary timing belt chain job on the V6 Pajero that normally costs a shittonne, was very well priced. Moved to Sydney, tried a couple up here, and neither were good, so went back to dealers.
The hassle of getting to and from any service centre and then having to do that again for updates, I would and have happily (maybe) paid extra to just have it all done at once. Or in the case of my dealer, do the service and ignore the updates and recalls.
Whatever I do car wise in the future, one thing is for sure, I won’t be dealing with Suttons Waitara again. My 18 month service is due at the end of the month, let’s see what idiocy I can get out of them this time.

Re: Jeep service costs

It was Suttons Waitara that wanted to change my brake fluid at the 40,000km service. I asked them if Jeep use a specially hygroscopic type of fluid.

Oh no... Waitara is where my GC is right now getting the airbag light fixed. Worried now.

I'm like Snuke, trying to find a good mechanic close to home, and then still have to deal with a dealer for all the updates. Meh! Provided I'm not getting seriously gouged, I'll pay that little bit extra to get the convenience of a courtesy car and all the updates. I'm also lucky that the car is being novated so I'm getting the fleet price on servicing which is quite a saving.

I'll keep an eye on what they are charging me in parts and investigate the BYO option.

Isn't it. I could see the pain in the Jeep Service Manager's eyes when he was telling me at my first service that they get screwed down on price by the leasing companies. Have to enjoy those little victories!

Re: Jeep service costs

For a good mechanic, I've used Steve at Quick Fit Motorsport, Hornsby, NSW a few times for various things. He listens intently and will give you a good argument if he thinks you are wrong but there is no "near enough is good enough" about him and cheap too.
