Jeep, Wife & Makeup

Ok, not sure how to start this but here goes......

Starting to notice a white discolouration on the front passenger handle which my beloved often uses. When she drives it every now and then I notice the same discolouration beginning to form on the drivers door.

Finger smudges are also present on the gloss black passenger door pillar. My Prado had the same issue on the pillar only they were a matt black which made it near impossible to clean off. Given ours are gloss, it's relatively easy to clean off.

Wife's Jetta's black matt black pillars are totally smudged with years of baked on handling.

My wife thinks I'm mad and seeing things but proof is in the pudding, see attached. I suspect this is related to the last bit of makeup she uses which could be some kind of white moisturiser.

1. Anyone else have this issue?
2. Anyone know of a product to restore the black leather door handle?

Re: Jeep, Wife & Makeup

I have the same thing from my Mrs., except that hers will wipe off with a damp microfibre shammy, or in stubbon cases, leather cleaner.

I think that it is the hand cream.

Re: Jeep, Wife & Makeup

My wife used vaseline brand hand cream comes in 1Lt pump container.
It just soaks into the leather like leather moisturizer.
She use to use expensive Olia and it would leave a white stain.

Re: Jeep, Wife & Makeup

My wife's Audi TT is suffering the same problem, on the matt trim of door armrest and top of the door.

I can normally remove it with armor-all cleaner, and then use armor-all low sheen protectant. However there was one patch on the door trim that wouldnt go. So I carefully used some black shoe polish to cover it up, buff it out and then over it again with the cleaner and protectant.

Re: Jeep, Wife & Makeup

As I see it, you guys need to evaluate the future.
Look at your investments and work out which, the car, or the wife, will give you the greatest dividend.
For me, it's a no brainer. The wife would have to go.
However, I can appreciate that others might possibly have a different view, and for that, you will have to live with your choices.
My wife did the same on "her" VW Golf. I easily fixed it using Maguires dash protectant.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the effect she might have had on the Jeep.

Re: Jeep, Wife & Makeup

I wouldn't use Armor All it is full of silicon which, its full of water & silicone emulsion which results in a greasy look and it doesn't really clean. Long term use causes hardening and cracking.

I use 303 Aerospace Protectant which I is found at autobarn..

Go to any detailing forum and Armor All doesnt get a good wrap..

Re: Jeep, Wife & Makeup

My wife uses hand cream by the bucket and I don't have this problem. On my son's Exploder (formerly mine, then used by my daughter for nearly a year) though the driver's dark grey armrest is nearly white with something, and after reading this I'm guessing it's sunscreen.

The crap will not come off.

Repeat after me:

"Never ever, ever, EVER use armor-all for anything on the interior of your car."

Past experiences = zero confidence in this product.

Re: Jeep, Wife & Makeup

You must be referring to the amorall crap that they used to sell in the 70's. Put that stuff on your vinyl dash and it would shine and then off-gas a film onto your windshield.

I've used Amor all leather conditioner and got great results. I like it better than Adams as it leaves a more natural luster instead of a shine.

Re: Jeep, Wife & Makeup

Actually No, this was the Nineties. Caused dash and leather cracking on many vehicles, mine included.

Unless they have changed the formula, I would never touch it again. Even if they have changed the formula, why would I ever take the risk? There are so many better products available on the market.

Obviously, my experience and opinion only.

Re: Jeep, Wife & Makeup

I'm with Swampy, the Armor all I used in my youth was nothing but a dust magnet to the dash not to mention actually encouraging dash cracks to appear. It also made everything you placed on the dash or console slimy.

I think I'd trust Maguires product range, I'll drop in to an Autobarn next time I drive past.

Nice to know I'm not the only one whose noticed makup as the "enemy within".
