Key Too Far Away

This happened to me today....

Parked outside bakery, with car running but in Park, I'm in driver seat, kids in back and wife gets out closes passenger front door and goes to shop.

Immediately car starts chiming with something like "Key too far away" showing on dash.

Problem is the key was in the cupholder in the console. Anyone have a clue?

Re: Key Too Far Away

Did your wife have her key in her purse?
If so maybe it was her fob that was recognised ahead of yours that was in the cupholder.

I've never seen that message but have noticed you can leave the Jeep with the engine running and the fob in your pocket - it's on my test list to see what happens when an attempt is made to drive off with the fob away.

Re: Key Too Far Away

I had the same thing, but the above is what happened. Turned off the car and then restarted with my key. It is the only time both keys were in the the car

Re: Key Too Far Away

No, the spare /2nd key was at home miles away. Only 1 key was in the vicinity.

I used the fob to lock / unlock the doors whilst enginewas still running but nothing, chime still sounding and message still on dash. The only way was as Enforcer mentions, switching engine off and back on, this reset.

Must have been a computer brain freeze and hopefully will be corrected with an update next week.

Re: Key Too Far Away

Maybe your wife had your wallet with her when she walked away.
The car goes into panic mode as it thinks you don't have enough money to buy fuel or make repayments.

Not at all, this is an intelligent car, it knows only moths exist in my wallet!

Re: Key Too Far Away

cup holder could be on the boarder of detection of the drivers compartment.
Wife sitting there could be just enough for the signal to be deflected.

I have had that message key too far away after leaving the car and coming back.
But went away once driving 100m down the street.

Re: Key Too Far Away

I think you're right, that's exactly what happened, keys in cup holder and only chimed as she got out. The "smart key" ain't as smart as it thinks it is eh!
