Knocking noise

I get this knocking noise every now and then. Its not the engine.
I think it may be coming from the compressor for the air suspension. It has only happened a handful of times, normally when I have just braked or just taking off. I did read somewhere that the compressor can be noisy. So is this normal as the noise is really loud, but only lasts maybe 3 to 4 seconds.

It's like the compressor is starting up but it's already at full pressure.

Even the wifey has said WHAT'S THAT NOISE? Cheers

Re: Knocking noise

How fierce acceleration and braking mate? I'm expecting "mild" given your wife was in the car, but who's to say. Could it be the ABS pump instead? That definitely makes a hammering knock when operating.

My QL compressor is almost silent when running. If it were to blame I'd reckon you'd hear it when working the suspension up and down in the driveway. Try a bit of that.

I read some stuff on the USA side regarding faulty shocks causing a knocking noise not unlike the "topping out" sound. I'm not Snuke... you'll have to find them yourself!

Let us know what you find.

Cheers,
Steve

Not under hard braking, it's normally when I'm taking it easy. Definitely not shocks. Could be ABS pump. It's loud and starts to do it when I am already stopped sometimes.

So have you heard your ABS pump knocking?

I have played with the ride height and heard no noise, but thought maybe if the compressor came on when it was already full it might make that sort of noise.

Is there any TSB for the ABS pump because when it does it, it doesn't sound good. Thanks for the help. CHEERS

Re: Knocking noise

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Clicking Noise
The driver may notice a clicking sound coming from the front or underneath the vehicle. This occurs when the vehicle is traveling above 35 mph and during the first portion of a drive cycle. The ESC system will run a calibration routine and if the driver lifts off of the gas pedal, the ESC system will stop the test because the drive may need to brake. The clicking sound is the valves in the ESC system. Once the calibration routine is successful, the noise will not return until the next ignition cycle. Once the ESC system has learned 50 times, the calibration will not be run during every ignition cycle. The sound may also become less noticeable over time. This sound is normal and no service needs to be done.

This may be the noise, but it's damn loud (not cool).
It does happen when we have just started driving.

Re: Knocking noise

I never heard this ESC run-in noise... not that this eliminates the possibility.

If you want to hear the ABS pump, find a bit of wet or unsealed road and hit the skids hard. Otherwise, if you have the collision avoidance gear, just let it do its thing as a car slows in front of you. Make sure that it's turned on first though!

Cheers,
Steve

I have heard that noise from the ABS, but in all the excitement it's a little hard to tell.

This noise just happens any old time. CHEERS

Re: Knocking noise

Yeah I was suggesting that it might be the same noise, but obviously not?

Cheers,
Steve

It could very well be the same noise, the niose described for the ESC is clicking.

This is more hammering knock. CHEERS
