Limitations of stock tyres

Anyone had the opportunity to really test out the stock Kumho's off road?
I'm most likely heading away for the weekend late November into the Vic high country and there are some day trips planned. I don't know the tracks or what the conditions will be like so I'm curious as to how the tyres may perform.

I'm not going to replace them for one weekend only (unless someone here in Melb has a set of A/T's I can borrow for the weekend)

Cheers,
Matty

Re: Limitations of stock tyres

Hi we did Vic high country, flinders ranges and oonadatta track on the kumhos, no issues though wouldn't count on them in mud. We did destroy them in 30,000 ks. Keep the speed down to 60 k max on sharp stones and drop the pressure to around 26 psi, worked for us.

Re: Limitations of stock tyres

I havent done nearly as much as hickers but I have done a few hrs off road with stock tyres (mine are michelin latitudes not the kumhos) and found them fine except mud as hickers said,

Re: Limitations of stock tyres

I think the only drama you'd have would be if it was really wet on those dirt tracks.

Re: Limitations of stock tyres

Kumhos at 20psi gave incredible traction on very steep dry loose rocky ground. Also good on sand at 16psi. Don't know about mud.

Re: Limitations of stock tyres

On sand at 20psi on 20'' rims, can't complain, handled well.
The sand was very soft and got lifted 200 series cruisers and pajeros stuck, but not the mighty jeep!

Re: Limitations of stock tyres

The local tyre shop was telling me that the 20' Kumho's (which they sell) on the JGC will get chewed up on sharp rocks. I personally think he was just trying to get me to go with 18" rims so I can buy his Coopers.

Re: Limitations of stock tyres

To be fair our kumhos did have lots of chips and tears after the oonadatta track but if you keep speed down and pressures right the risk of damage is less. We have seen plenty of every tyre brand carcass on the side of the tracks so. More about luck and the drivers behavior I think!
