Re: Mopar 8220WKBP Bonnet Protector not suitable for 2012 GC

During my free service this morning, I asked where my bonnet seal was....could have waged my annual salary, not ordered and told that it gets thrown away as the bonnet protector uses the same holes. Fortunately I had MM1964's installation instructions plus the photo that I quoted " Clearly identifies the seal in situ and the Jeepgarage.org website of which I am a premium member mentions the danger of water being ingested into the engine during heavy rain". A seal is now on order (yet to be confirmed). Straight after the service I took advantage of the complementary auto car wash. If any body was in any doubt, take a look at my photo. During the auto wash, the car was sprayed with suds containing a purple dye. Drove the car home, opened the bonnet and low and behold suds in the air filter. The seal is mandatory and should not have been removed. This could answer the shudder I had driving the rain at high speed last week.

Incredible response from the professionals. Glad the doco helped.

Wonder how many others have been told the same or had possibly had it removed by the dealer/s when they've installed the bonnet protector.

Re: Mopar 8220WKBP Bonnet Protector not suitable for 2012 GC

Guys, just want to throw something out there, but do reckon its feasible that the shudder I get at around 93kms could possibly be related to disturbed airflow into the intake due to the missing bonnet seal. I thought of this today. I wonder if the seal, other than keeping out water, also restricts turbulent air entering the intake, air being drawn in though the sides rather than directly under the lip of the bonnet

Re: Mopar 8220WKBP Bonnet Protector not suitable for 2012 GC

I agree with allypally, if anything it would work better. hence why we have turbo's fitted. but don't get me wrong, i would still be chasing down the rubber strip

Re: Mopar 8220WKBP Bonnet Protector not suitable for 2012 GC

I like the mopar side window deflectors as they go over and cover the chrome stripe around the windows. I had the opportunity to compare side by side two MG GC's with/without mopar side window deflectors, and the GC with side window deflectors looked better. The Weathertech side window deflectors go under the window frame. Also the mopar (part # 82212047) dark tint bonnet bug/stone deflector, which IMHO looks better match for MG colour.

Glenn ... does the shudder come in at 93, and then go away again as you go past that mark?

It might be because of the missing strip, but only way to prove it is to replace it. It wont be because of turbulent air entering the intake, however it might be that at a specific speed you may get air flow patterns at the leading edge of the bonnet that could in fact lower air pressure, thus reducing the air available for the intake.

As the vehicle speed increases, then the airflow behaviour keeps changing and the air pressure may change again and air flow in to the intake might be acceptable.

Typically the leading edge of a bonnet towards the side is a low pressure spot. So that strip may in fact function to normalise air pressure at the air intake, and not just reduce water entry.

Good reading about low pressure spots here ...

Cheers Savvas. Yes, 93kmh is the magic figure. I've got 25 years of aeronautics so might be overcomplicating things, but the bonnet guards "aerofoil section" acentuates the negative pressure on it's underside. (opposite effect to an aircraft wing). I'ts as though when opening the throttle at that speed, it can't get a big enough gulp of air. I too believe the bonnets seal's intent is two-fold. I might duck out later and give it a go with a temporary seal. I've been known to be wrong in the past but I have never been known to admit it!!

Fitted my own bonnet seal tonight. CJD tried to charge me because this seal is not included in an Australian built GJC, but the service guy was very reasonable and put it down as a warranty and I got it for free.

Hey GlennR.

Do you have any pics and a part number? I had the bonnet protector fitted with the weather shields when I bought the car and there's no rubber seal.
