Navigation System Quirks

Hello to all.

Have had our new JGC a few weeks now and loving it.

The only weekness in the package that we have found is the navigation system.

We have continuing issues where the system doesnt recognise a street, or won't recognise a street number (doesn't then give you the next closest), has an adversion to using the main road that leads to / near our house (will take us a longer, less used route) and keeps popping up with "maps in this area not verified" or words to effect, even in areas that have been there 20 to 30 years. Our old handheld TomTom didn't have any of these issues.

Are others having similar issues with JGC system?

Drive from Perth city to joondalup, It refuses to use the freeway.
Go on the freeway and every exit until ocean reef road it tells you to take the next exit.
Or along Alexander drive going to a friends never been there before.
It had us leave Alexander drive left then right then right then left onto Alexander drive.

checked a month ago and it wasn't.
Chrysler AUS said any customers in warranty will get a notice when a map update comes out.
No price confirmation.
Will it be free or do we have to pay? they could not answer.

It is so out of date it should be free.

I have been told there will be a map update and a firmware update around Feb but no further details at this stage as I have complained about the same issues. Areas that have been around for years are not supported and relatively new estates (3 - 4 years old) not showing up roads that would show up on my in car nav in my Ford. Still not sure if its going to cost but for a $3k unit they would want to bring it up to date with out charging.

I think it is important that as many owners as possible whinge to the dealers to at least exert some pressure. I think that the issue is greater than just a simple map update as the system does many strange things. An example is that it will refuse to map along what is an obvious route, as if it it doesnt recognise the road. However if you drive along the road it is shown on the map?

Lets hope they can get it sorted as it really is the only deficency with this vehicle. Still love the Jeep though.

The problem is with the Navteq maps, not the unit.
I am sure the accuracy will be improved with more recent releases.
We have hardly used the Satnav as we have only been local and the dubbo trip it worked fine.
Navteq are the new guys in the market, so the bugs are still being ironed out.
I expect we will be hit up for updates on the maps just like other car companies do.

Thanks for the post. How did you work out that the system uses Navteq maps?

Maybe WA maps are worse then other states. There are so many areas where the system advises "unverified area maps" (or words to effect) in areas that have been there 20 -30 years. Maybe that is part of the problem and why the unit avoids certain roads, because the maps in that area are unverified.

I read about it on the mygig forum for our head units. Like any mapping, it will take time to iron the bugs out. VDO and Garmin are to expensive, so many makers are going for Navteq as their maps are cheaper.

You can report errors in Navteq maps to Navteq here: http://mapreporter.navteq.com

You find the place on the map and then report what the error is, like if there should be a road there, or if the cartography is wrong or if signs, bridges, POI's etc are wrong or if there is an Incorrect location or data, or a missing item etc

After that Navteq field analysts check the data with their The Navteq Maps car, but until they can get to it, the data stays the same, at least if you report it, it should get fixed sooner

"For more remote and rural areas, Navteq sources data from government-owned mapping company PSMA and local authorities."

Hi Gabs

I'll hit them up when I send the car in for it's 10k service. The Nav system really is very poor. The system simply defies logic and does not appear to recognise intersections or roads (major, not minor) that have been there for 20 years.

I' am not sure of my chances with the Jeep dealer but we shall see how it goes.

This must be a problem for anyone not on the east coast, as the satnav for me has been fine. I have a portable satnav that also gets it wrong often with names/numbers or loactions. The main thing everyone needs to realise is that the maps are made by Navteq, not Jeep.

This is true that the maps are Navtech. However if you plan a route on the Navtech internet site, it recognises roads and intersections as it should. In the car, it does something different. Therfore Jeep has to sort this issue out with Navtech as to why our maps are so far out of date or why the Nav system interprets the data from Navtech as it does.

Either way it is Jeeps problem that they need to fix. Incidently my portable TOM TOM has none of those issues here in the West.

I agree Navteq has up to date maps but not on our Mygigs.

There is a forum on whirlpool how the map makers sell older maps cheep to some GPS manufactures.

I like my TOM TOM and the IPhone TOM TOM. Just like the integrated large touchscreen.

MYGIG with TOM TOM navigation like the eclipse radios.

Mine is the same.
I had a good play with the satnav tonight and had no issues with the POI.
I can only think they have not included the WA (or only east coast) POI in the system.
Hopefully they will make the updates available for us to update, it looks like we have the latest versions on our cars. One day our cars will just update themselves with the home wifi.

Update done.
I did get scared at one stage.

Copied the files (1folder 2 files) to a 8GB USB drive formatted fat32.
Started the car.
Inserted the drive, and wait.
Screen pops up "update available" update version from to yes no.
YES
Shit myself wet my pants EVIC warning blind spot monitoring not available. Orange triangles in mirrors.
No No the update is in German.
Too late cant stop it now.
Takes about 30min.
Restarts
POI location is German:eek:
Play around for 5 minutes and find the location selection AUS or NZ.
Select NZ no AUS yes;)
all looks OK
Doing 400km drive tomorrow see how it goes.

POI's suck
Kalgoorlie (population 40,000) has 10 public schools and 4 private schools.
None are listed. Nearest one is Salmon Gums 300km away and population of 200.
No ATM or bank in Kambalda West oh no Kambalda West! Got Kambalda though. Both separate suburbs.
Does find BP in Kalgoorlie now.

Hey that's great.

We'll all be waiting to hear how the system runs.

You heading into Perth tomorrow?

I am currently downloading the software upgrade so really interested to hear if there is any improvement in the way it interprets the maps.

POI's, I can do without. Reliable and accurate navigation is what I'm after.
