I posted over there:

I'm a newbie but isn't the hook set too far back?

It seems to me that if the recovery vehicle cannot position itself directly in front then it is going to do some serious damage to the bumper. Just doesn't look like there'd be much clearance between a strap and the bumper section to the right (looking at that photo).

So it's going to hidden behind the cover, is that the idea? I think the go might be to expose, take off the warning sticker, chrome it and light it with a blue LED behind the bumper.

If that bracket can be fitted to the nearside, can it also be fitted to the drivers side? i.e. an additional bracket.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

It looks very recessed in the front bar, I guess that is because of the pedestrian impact BS.
I would hate to try to fit a snatch strap to that small recessed hook in a difficult position. It looks like you would rip the front bar off if you did not have a cable or something thin and strong to attach to the hook. The pictures may not reveal the truth, but it does not look too practical.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

To me it looks like somewhat more accessible than other 4wd's. With a lot of others you need to go crawling under the car to find the hooks. Not as accessible as the 2011 JGC hooks.

At least there's the option to remove the dam.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Also, how do you get the cover in front of the hook off without taking the lower bumper off?

Or is the hook exposed with that nasty yellow sticker?!

There is a little cover that just pops out (see the first pic).

But still believe it is recessed too much. Imagine trying to remove the front dam underwater, mud or sand.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

The yellow sticker, I am guessing, is there for those pedestrains to read prior to impact. To me the hook appears to be too short, and as others have already indicated, if used, might do damage to the bumper when not being used for a direct front on pull. I dont know why they did not introduce a longer adaptable hook. I am thinking that if a 2nd hook was added, and a bridle used between them, there woul be less risk of damage.

Unless if you take the lower bumper off before 4 wheel driving?

however - these hooks are so much more logical!!

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Hey guys, think you've got it all wrong. Jeeps don't get stuck or bogged. Potential damage at best limited. More chance of the front lower air foil being ripped off by a rock or log that by a snatch strap.
The only reason we ever needed a front recovery point was so there was something on the front to hook the car in front on to pull 'them back out'.

Seriously though, My last KJ was taken off road on 50 plus trips and I never once had to use the front recovery points. There was however 2 occassions where I had to use the rear tow hitch. Guess that what you get when you lead 4WD trips:-)
