AussieWK2,

Here's a couple from another forum(not my vehicle but you get the idea).

I saw a 2011 WK2 on the weekend which looks so much better with the 2 visible hooks.

Oh and I think every 2012 model is the same.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I imagine now they have the mounting sub assembly engineered you could fit a different hook. But it would not be ADR compliant and possibly void warranty. I am pretty happy with it as is.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Thanks for the pics.

I still can't fathom the complete balls up of the the front hook. Why any 4X4 manufacturer would assume a front hook to be "optional" is beyond me.

I must confess I've missed much of this debate but it strikes me odd that all of a sudden the 2011 is no longer ADR compliant yet, the recessed version in the 2012 onwards is? Am I missing something?

I've attached images of 1 of my front hooks which is not recessed, it sticks out +/- 30mm but lines up with the bumper so it does not protrude from the car itself.

Don't know what all the ADR cuffuffel was about but I see absolutely no safety issue with the 2011 hook vs the 2012 onwards mod.

I too have not been following this thread fully, but are you saying that the 2011 are not ADR compliant?

I don't think it's an ADR thing, I believe it's a Euro thing and our Aussie Jeeps come via that channel so we inherited their issues. They couldn't retrofit the old hooks because they had changed the underlying cross member and effectively shortned the chassis a little resulting in pedestrians initially hitting the plastic and not metal.

That's my understanding anyway.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

So, the European's have decreed the hooks would be a danger to pedestrians? mmmm have to think through the logic of that one.

I'm not an astrophysicist but I would have thought the velocity and sheer weight of the car hitting the pedestrian would have caused most of the sustained injuries to the pedestrian, the hooks, as I see it, have very little bearing.

So the Euro's decree a standard and Jeep jump and whilst they jump they make a sweeping change across the board without:

  1. researching the Aust market (or other markets)
  2. advising new 2012 buyers of the change BEFORE they signed up thus weakening to a point the 4X4 capabilities of their mass produced car
Last time I checked the Australian landscape, beaches and tracks have no resemblance to Europe.

Seems to me this was an uneducated, ill-informed, hastily made decision made on the run by Jeep to keep the Euro's happy.

Not very cleaver given the angst they've caused you 2012 owners.

By hey, on the positive side, at least the Euro regulators are happy and that's very important to us here in Australia.

Curious to see how they've integrated the hook into the 2012's......do you guys have pic's, if so, please post up and advise if Laredo, Limited or Overland.
Normally it's completely hidden by a cover plate similar to the one on the right that covers the hole for the towing eye-bolt. The pic shows it with the cover plate removed and a snatch strap in it. The 2011 hooks are a square affair similar (I'm guessing) to the rear hook whereas the 2012 front hook is smaller, circular and harder to get the snatch strap on it securely. All in all, a bit of a compromise but at least it works.

Apparently some mental giant in the States decided that all export GCs should be same. I think the logic goes like this, "All non-American look alike". So even though ADR does not require Euro compliance, we got it anyway. Here is the scary part, bull-bars are illegal in Europe.

I think we probably get the euro models because of the RHD issue, I guess they didn't want to have to re-tool to make two different versions of the RHD and we were just the innocent bystanders.

Yep, all of the above.

We just got caught up in the Euro rules and Chrysler Australia were too stupid to realise the problem this would create.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

The hooks are a risk in pedestrian collisions since they could make direkt contact to the tibia (Major bone of the lower leg) without any cushioning, resulting in an immediate fracture.
They are a risk for the car itself, since even in minor collisions the force of the impact will be directed directly into the frame leading to an early deformation of strucurally important elements, usually protected by some more deformable materials.
Thus it would be a good idea to have a kind of durable and retractable hooks to be pulled out while offroading. Maybe a good idea not only for aftermarket....

However, concerning traffic congestion an population per square mile the risk over all n australia might be a littlebit lower than in Europe

Happy Day

Achim
