Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Not sure that I'm liking those exposed hoses.....?

I can just see many scenarios now......knee deep in the sand / mud trying to pull someone out or getting pulled out yourself, pull the cover off, attach snatch strap, get yanked out, thank or be thanked (depending on who got stuck) and then it hits you........where did I leave that cover?

All in all whilst it's not the best solution, I think it's "a" solution to a bad situation. You guys have every reason to feel diddled, bad form really.

If you're out playing, stock up on spare covers!

Thus it would be a good idea to have a kind of durable and retractable hooks to be pulled out while offroading. Maybe a good idea not only for aftermarket....

However, concerning traffic congestion an population per square mile the risk over all n australia might be a littlebit lower than in Europe

Its like life in general:

Australia has really great outdoors as well as the funnel web spider so nice there,
Germany has the no limit autobahn and 70% of the worlds tax legislation written in german, so nice here as well.

However, in Australia i would prefer the tow hooks and reduction gear, in germany 240Hp and 8-spd tranny.

So the 2014 GC mihgt be a good choice over all

G day

Achim

Iím old enough to remember when Alan Jones came back to Australia after winning the F1 world championship and him having an altercation with a CAMS official over the airdam on the Porsche (a 930 from memory) he was then running for the Alan Hamilton race team. Jonesy struggled with the local rules, after the professionalism of F1. Anyway the official took umbrage at a thin aluminum strip that protruded at the base of the fiberglass front airdam, intended to protect it as it rubbed along the tarmac. The official thought it dangerous if there was a crash.

Quick as a flash, Jones offered to drive into the official at 250km/h with the strip, and then again at 250km/h without the strip, so the official could see if there was any difference.

The aluminum strip stayed on.

Iím not saying safety on a public road isnít important, just an old story that amused me at the time.

Today I checked out the ECB big tube bullbar for my 2012 WK2 which includes 2 recovery points. They were on display at the Melb 4X4/Fishing/Camping show. Despite having a wish for a winch bar(currently none available on the Aus market), I think ECB might have won me over.
There could be a recovery hook listed on ebay soon.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Had the recovery hook fitted this week. I also bought the Ironman recovery strap which seems to have a smaller loop based on comments i've seen.

Is there a technique to get the strap to fit. The hook seems too small! I've manipulated strap to soften etc but cannot fit. I'd hate to have to use it in real need and I wonder how I'd get it off again.

What am I missing ..... and I have used recovery straps on vehicles in the past with never an issue like this.

Hey Ross, I've got an ironman 8t strap and It's tight but fits well. I find the best strategy is to just push it as far in as you can and then sideways. I've attached a few photos for comparisons sake of the loop sitting on a leather glove. It's probably worth mentioning that I picked this strap up from my local Ironman dealer for about $120 in a recovery kit which included 9m 8000kg snatch strap, two 4.7 bow shackles, recovery hitch, leather gloves and reinforced carry bag - pretty good value I reckon.

As Jasman says, the loop needs to be slipped in sideways. The situation is made worse by the hex head of the bolt which holds the hook to the bracket. The head partly blocks the hook's gap. This can be eased slightly by rotating the bolt so that the flat nearest the gap is vertical.
