Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

What are thoughts on using a rated bow shackle between hook and strap?

My thoughts......
Likely hard to get into the space available because the hook is recessed behind the front bumper - but if you did get it in, more an issue (to me) would be any possible contact between the shackle and all the plastic surrounding.
With just the strap on the hook at least softish surfaces may come in contact.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Just a thought, I've got a rear recovery hook and a tow hitch. Would this suffice in the interim before risking taking it on sand?

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Should be fine as long as you aren't towing anything and not going on any narrow trails so a rescuer can get to the rear. Might be preaching to the choir but needs to be said- don't use the tow ball as a recovery point. The rear hook should be fine.

Agreed. I've tried 2 different types. The 4.5t shackle, well, forget it. This wouldn't even fit through the hole in the bumper and then I tried a 3.25t. Although it fit through the bumper hole, there wasn't enough room to maneuver it once inside and it still seemed too thick.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Ok. Wasted some coin on the shackle. Might come in handy rescuing someone else. Did I see someone posted at some stage some sort of connector made out of nylon or something of the like that was rated?

That caught my eye too, they are a Grotty Yatchy thing, look interesting:

Must be able to get here I expect. If you search the web there are a number of DYI instructions to make your own.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

If anyone is considering using any device to attach a strap please be aware that when connected and loaded the energy stored in that strap can be enormous.
Straps are a fantastic tool but don't take them lightly.
Over the years I've been recovered many times, however I am extremely selective and cautious when it comes to being connected to another vehicle.
I've seen major damage to vehicles from strap impact when one has broken or disconnected from an attachment.
Consequences have been fatal.
Here's some images from the web that have been around for years and are a typical example of the result of bad decisions. You can see the imprint of a socket bar that had been used to join 2 straps.....

Agree. I saw footage on youtube the other day of a guy stepping over a loaded winch cable.

Agreed! One should use a shackle only if the recovery point is a load rated closed loop, not a hook. The risk is having a lump of high tensile steel sling shot towards one or other of the drivers.
