Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Had a spare day today so decided to see if I could cut the end off the recovery hook.

Took me about an hour to get the recovery hook off, the lower air dam is a bugger to remove and access is a bit tight to get to the bolts.

But long story short, I cut the end off the hook with the angle grinder, filed is smooth - no problems. Gave it a coat of rustrid paint and black spray paint and it looks like a shop bought one.

I doubt the strap has any real chance of falling off - no more than the 2011 hooks.

Here are some photos:

Thanks GMWK2.

I've been interested to see if anyone would get around to this. I just wish I was handy enough to do it to mine. Good job.

Clarkey.

Saw you at IKEA Springwood today.........that Jeep of yours looks absolutely awesome in the flesh and the side steps really finish the job. Sorry about the drool !!!! Made mine look a bit boring but I've got a better chance platting fog than being allowed to mod mine like you have done.(Was thinking some 22" SRT's in black chrome) I think the chrome grille is best kept original as you have done.....got a performance chip yet???

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Hello there, could anyone give me a good contact for an Australian dealer from whom I might purchase one of these work around retro-fitted hooks?

I am in Saudi Arabia and the dealership here has no idea about this topic. I plan to purchase the hook and have it shipped here for installation. I would like to know if this is possible prior to purchasing a 2012 JGC. I don't want to pass up the savings I can get on an overland right now, but I also don't want an SUV that I can't trust off road.

Thanks,

Yafi

UPDATE: Never mind, none of the dealers I contacted will ship overseas. I will just try with my dealer directly. Thanks anyway.

Yafi, most Australian dealers should now be able to order a hook. The correct part number that should show in any system is Jeep WK Grand Cherokee GENUINE Mopar Front Recovery Hook Part: CH8220WKRH There was a dealer in Melbourne that had hooks advertised on Ebay, but the item is no longer available - Jeep WK Grand Cherokee GENUINE Mopar Front Recovery Hook Part: CH8220WKRH | eBay
perhaps you could contact them via ebay (or give them a call) and see if they would still do a transaction for you.
The hook is actually manufactured in New Zealand (by Best Bars) for Mopar and maybe it is possible that Jeep have only done these in our region to stop the outcry in Australia regarding the deletion of the front hook. The current WK2 models still come with the screw in tow eye (but it's not a proper rated recovery hook)
Good luck
John

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

The GC WK2 comes with a a light duty tow eye that is NOT rated for off road recovery but there is a 4500Kg hook that can be fitted to the left side front for off road recovery. I had mine fitted on delivery. The rear hook is still standard.

What else I found interesting was that this dealer has enough to sell in eBay but jeep owners are still waiting for this part which is on 'back order'. In the end I got my dealership to get on from Northern Motor Group because Chrysler /Jeep couldn't provide it.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Hi Guys,

I have ordered the GJC without two hooks. Waiting for it to be delivered by the end of the month or early next.

Question:
* Should I get dealer to fit the tow hook. If so how much would they charge me.
* or Should I purchase the tow hook myself and go down to Jeep Service and get them to install it?

I would be hopeless at installing it myself so that rules that option out.
