Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

From what I understand, Studgun removed the accessory recovery hook which he purchased for the passenger side, then had someone make a second bracket, but with a mirror angle. i.e. one left, and the other right. It was then just a matter of purchasing a second hook and a few bolts.
It may be that the recovery hook at the rear of the car is the same as those at the front. If that is the case, it could be relocated.
I know ARB sell hooks for a very reasonable price, and if these can be made to adapt to a homemade bracket, problem solved.
All we need is for someone to make a batch of these brackets and sell them for a reasonable price.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I've had a look at a '14 where the jeep hooks should attach. Both sides have the two rearward 16mm bolt holes & nuts inplace for our "tow hook" to bolt to. There is a bracket which is the same needed for the real hooks we all want ( but it's mounted in reverse) mounted on the drivers side for our "tow hook" to screw into.
All we are short are the 2 front holes (circled in red). Can't we just drill the 4 19mm holes?

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I think we're all on the same page here Justin and AllyPally. There's a simple solution pending much the same as the MY12 / Studmuffin approach. As inclined, all that is required is for someone to cash up for some CNC work to produce the left and right intermediate brackets in quantity and post 'email out as requested. Well I can do that. If possible, I'd set it up to accept the Jeep OEM hook or the standard Aussie retail outlet hooks. I can see the latter could be difficult to use in the restricted space available so get the vibe about the Jeep unit. Has anyone found a part number for the Jeep hook only?

Does anyone know how similar the MY14 mounting pattern is to the MY12? If it's the same as I heard it suggested, I would not lose a seconds sleep plagiarising Jeep's pattern. I figure they owe us

Justin I wouldn't drill your car in the location described, let alone mine. I'm not a nanny subscriber... it's just not nice! Professionally, drilling is the last resortt... and I can see several potential designs which don't require it.

We will never surrender

Cheers,
Steve

Dropped into a south western sydney dealer today to ask about recovery hooks for the MY14 - just for the sport.

The sales person knew about the issues with the MY12, trailhawk etc. so a promising start. He then said yes recovery hooks could be fitted. Had they actually fitted any - shuffle feet - well, no. Could he provide a part number or hand on heart guarantee they could be fitted - well, no. Could he get some and fit them up on one of their demos - Ummm. ....

I Gave up.

I left my contact details and he said he would investigate and get back to me.

Shall I hold my breath?

Stealing a joke I gleaned from this forum... not unless you want it to be your last!

I'm waiting a call back from my dealer regarding an undertaking to do so earlier today. I guess they're working back real late

Cheers,
Steve

Can you elaborate mate? Have you drilled them in yourself or are they hiding there already or is this a US model bumper support or...

Cheers,
Steve

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

That would be the US bar. Looks like the factory spot welds the spacer bracket ( H ) to the support bar, when hooks are factory fitted.
Still think it would be ok to drill the 2 holes each side on our front bumper support bars, it's the only thing we're missing.
Off to sharpen up the drillbit

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

So is that "H" bracket in the previous diagram the same bracket that's spot welded on the earlier photo?

Looks like the bumper is drilled either way. Is the spot welding required? Does that keep those spacers from shifting under load?

The spot welding might be the one thing that would be difficult to replicate. Or you could fashion a bracket and weld it normally I suppose.

And what about the nuts in the back that anchor the end of the tow hook, does that hole already exist, and the nuts come with the tow hooks if you bought the parts?

Knew I had a photo here somewhere. You can see here that the "bumper support bar" or whatever we're calling it bends back towards the car on '12-13 "pedestrian safe" models (haven't seen a '14 but assuming its the same judging by everyone's comments) whereas the '11 and US model bar goes straight across. And therein lies the problem. You could possibly drill holes, but they won't come close to lining up with your hooks anyway. I'll be getting a bullbar when they're released, so someone can buy my two hooks then.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

As we will have a few GC's up at Stockton Beach this weekend for Sand Driving, and hopefully a MY14 will be amongst us, we should have good photos of the front chassis, as I suspect all of us will have our air dams removed in order to avoid destruction. If I find, as I suspect Studgun did, I know a welder who just might be interested in knocking up several brackets for these hooks. Maybe a bracket could be created that will support a locally made hook.
