Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Has anyone jumped underneath and had a look at an aftermarket solution? Is there anyway you could cut and weld your own on?

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Interesting, my dealer (Laredo on it's way) has emailed me back with an official Jeep response attached advising that the screw in recovery eye is rated and appropriate for 4WD recovery. The dealer is aware that I intend to use it for off road touring and have an alliance with a Jeep club where several members have upgraded from their old Jeep to the new model. It is an email forwarded on from Jeep Aus. Wonder why I have this email, yet it is not the response on their FB page? Anyone interested in seeing the document, PM me your email address. regards Scott

My point is that if the spec sheet states A/T tyres and the vehicle leaves the plant passing inventory and QA checks, then one would have to assume that somebody down the line is swapping the tyres to A/S. There is probably nothing we can do about it, it just seems silly since many of us would prefer the A/T tyres.

BobT, The spec change in 2012 models as per CJD fax is for A/S tyres, however those of us who purchased 2011 Laredos are entitled to A/T tyres, I have asked my dealer to take it up with Jeep, if the answer is in the negative, I will take it further, Fair Trading for a start.

And they will stand by this if we take it 4WDing and get into a situation where we need it? What happens when it snaps and injures someone and you are still stranded.

I just dont see how that bolt could be used for recovery.

PMd ya about email, cheers

Hi Scott. I haven't seen that response but it is definately out of date. I spoke to the chrysler aust state sales manager yesterday and he confirmed that the dealers have received a bulletin saying the tow bolt is for flat bed recovery only and it is not rated for 4wd bog recovery.

whilst your issues are related to the softening of the JGC as 4wd capable you guys might like to start a new thread about tyres.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I received a copy of the email from Scarps (thanks Scott).
it is very clear in content and states (amongst other things...) that the removable eye replaces the fixed hook and is approved for use in off road recovery situations.
While we haven't got delivery of our WK2 yet (end Feb!!!) - I've seen the hook and it does look light on compared to the fixed hook, but if it is an engineered item rated for the job then I can't see an issue.
It does use exactly the same attachment points the fixed hook uses, apart from the two front bolts that would have only stopped the hook from rotating. Those two front holes are in the crossmember, and (in my vehicle) I wouldn't like any forces applied at 90 degrees to it anyway.
I don't know why Jeep simply hasn't put this out there right from the start - I believe it would have stopped fires from starting - their statement that it is approved for off road recovery makes it very difficult to mount an argument.
It seems an effective compromise to a situation where Jeep must produce a vehicle that does comply with regulations - much and all as there will always be an element out there that doesn't agree.
My take anyway.
One other point is that the bulletin also notes that the eye is to be used "as highlighted in the handbook".....can anyone check that part and verify or otherwise?
John

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I also found on ebay.com the other night a set of screw in tow hooks advertised as 'disappointed that your WK2 doesn't come with recovery hooks?', here's the solution.

In effect it looks like a new version of the WK2 tow eye supplied but with a hook end instead of an eye. It also sells as a set of 2? indicating that one can be screwed in on each side.

Can anyone with a new 2012 WK2 confirm that there is a mount for the tow eye on both sides at the front? Splitting a recovery over two points (straight on) surely must spread the load?
Scott

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

These are different in design to the 2011 tow hooks that we would have seen when ordering our new JGC's.
