Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

This week my Brisbane dealer advised that the front recovery hooks had arrived for my 2014 GC Limited. Please see attached parts photo supplied by the dealer. $783 fitted! - but as they pointed out - includes 2 hooks and 1.5 hours of shop labour to fit them. I am informed by a dealer that Jeep advised dealers of this parts availability in November 2013.
All of this information surprised me - having read many posts on the subject and being told by the dealer last month that a single hook Mopar part was still under development.
To me the parts offerred look very similar or the same as US part 82212095? I see from previous posts that some members on this site do not believe that 82212095 will fit the 2014GC. I don't have a part number for the quoted units as yet - it could be different to the US units.
I would very much appreciate hearing from any member or supplier that has actually fitted the Mopar units in the attached photo to a 2014 Aussie GC.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I'm not clear... have they been "installed" by the dealer yet? If so, a picture at around 45 degrees upwards through the knockouts should show all. If not, I'd be supervising the job! Sikaflex only holds so good

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks for responding Steve.
No they haven't been ordered or installed as yet.

Here are the photos of both sides - no holes in cross member. Each hook needs 2 holes drilled and nuts placed inside the channel cross member - if that is OK engineering wise. There seems to be some nut inserts in the fitting pack? I will check further with the dealer.
I would like to know if anybody has used these yet - and how successfully.

I'm no engineer Benaldo... I overdo stuff to compensate... but I don't like the sound of the plan. Unless there's a few laminations of steel where the nuts are inserted they're just gonna pull through and let that hook loose like a demon mama. Do you want to drill a 3-4mm pilot hole to suss it out first?

I'd be waiting on the Chief before I went that way mate, though it's easy to say "wait" when your own car is in order. The difficulty getting basic shit done to these things is frustrating.

All the best,
Steve

Oh, and I forgot to say... don't the mounting points for the hooks end up forward of the AU crossmember altogether? You can drill and plate up all you like... fresh air just ain't no good for bolting stuff

I installed the Australian passenger side JA recovery hook
Very poorly designed and well over priced
If you use this hook for anything then a dead straight pull you will damage your bummer bar 100% for sure
The worst design ever

When i was installing this hook i had time to look closely at the drivers side rail
It appeared to me that if you removed the factory fitted tow bracket then the holes were present as per the passenger side so i could see no reason why a recovery hook could not be installed

But wait Chief products in Qld have been working on a better rated design that should fit both the drivers and passengers side
They are undertaking a trial fit over the Australia day weekend on a number of models just to make sure
They have already undertaken some massive field testing
I just hope they can keep the price down to a reasonable area

I would say Don't buy the JA New Zealand designed stupid recovery hook and wait until the After market ones are made available should not long now

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

bmackin,
You seriously need to talk to your accountant about the importance of getting a product to market quickly. Every day you delay, your cash flow is eroded, the product is one day closer to obsolescence and you risk losing a customer you might have had.

Hi BobT,

That is very good advice and something we're definitely thinking about. We of course want to make sure we're releasing a good product, but we also want to get them onto everyone's WK2s as soon as possible. We're WK2 owners ourselves and we're just as anxious as you are to get some decent recovery points on our vehicle. There is a fair bit of engineering and testing that is needed to make sure these are reliable, easy to install and safe. I think that is somewhat evident by the lack of good options in the marketplace already.

On a positive note, we have finalised our design and are doing a test fitting for various WK2 models on Jan 25th. They will go into production and be available for sale soon after.

Cheers,
Bill

19th January Update
The Parts are indeed Mopar #82212095 and will fit my 2014 GC - 4 small holes in the front cross member must be drilled. I've ordered the parts and will update this thread once fitted.
FYI - I was informed that the Aussie GC's will come fitted with these as "standard equipment" later this year (MY2015?).
