Because you are on this thread I'm guessing you live in Oz and have an "export" Jeep. This probably explains why the holes are in a different location.

Yes, I am in Sydney. No, the holes are the same on the US vehicles (http://www.rocky-road.com/media/2014-wk2-winch.jpg). Apparently though it is possible to remove the front fascia with the fairlead in the normal position. However to meet ADR's the fairlead needs to be recessed. So many options

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

As many around here, my MY15 GC Limited didn't come with front recovery hooks. When checking the car manual, I can read "For off-road recovery, it is recommended to use both of the front tow hooks to minimize the risk of damage to the vehicle".

Does this mean that it's not safe to use the rear hook? Is it really likely that I'll cause damage to the car if I use it?

Snatch recoveries always involve some level of risk. Any number of items can break under the stress of a recovery. The point the manual makes is that using 2 hooks spreads the load and REDUCES the risk. Each of the hooks, front and back are rated the same:

Front Tow Hooks (Two per Vehicle RT and LT) / Rear Tow Hook (one per Vehicle LT)
2.Design for durability Requirements
1.0 /1.5 GVW pull.
2.0 GVW pull with no separation.
0.9 GVW 90 deg outboard pull no separation.
0.5 GVW push/pull (BUX).

I prefer to use recovery trax to snatch recovery where I can, a lot less risk using those.

What they are getting at is that it is usual for the bogged vehicle to be snatched from the front. That way it is easier for the driver of the bogged vehicle to provide added traction and control. The rear hook is more to snatch out other vehicles. Of course, sometime one has no choice. Perhaps there is a risk of damage but it's better than walking home.

No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/new...-1227439791460

I've got a bit of an association with this one - a family member is in the emergency services and attended this accident. A tragedy for those injured and a crap job for the rescue crews. A reminder to take extra care with recoveries.

And the fire rescue crews and police don't get paid enough.....

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

It must have been a truly awful scene Bob. Imagine how helpless you'd feel...

As I've said just once or twice, there is always something on board that will suffice as a dampener. Put one about 1.5 metres or so from each end... the middle is not as effective if something goes wrong. Make sure they are attached to the strap and can't be flicked off at the critical moment. Consider that wet and recently used straps do not have the same elasticity and will apply more shock load on attachment points.

Hopefully the event brings about education, which will help prevent the same again.

Awful, and presumably the guy who died was the one who stopped to help. I shudder at the thought of shackles attached to elastic snatch straps.
