Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

The gap between the hook end and the bit that mounts to the chassis is quite small, so a shackle pin won't go though the gap if you get the correct size.

The gap is so small that many of us early adopters (MY12 and 13) had trouble getting a snatch strap or shackle to fit at all.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

The shackle just fits perfectly into the 'fold' of the tow hook. As the pin of the shackle faces down (and could potentially drop out if it rotated and worked its way loose) I put a small cable tie through the 3mm hole in the head of the pin to stop it rotating. Much like a split pin works to stop a bolt undoing.

Just fitted an ARB bar to my 2014 GC - the JA recovery hook had to go. A pity because ARB have a massive tow eye, and a sticker proclaiming it must not be used in conjunction with a snatch strap, and that the sticker must not be removed! The legal dept has covered all angles.
Therefore..........I have a AUSWKHOOK to fit passenger side if any one wants one. Never been used in anger but has scratched paint from when I wired the bow shackle pin to it. PM for details.
BTW .....I am no longer concerned about the lack of a safe recovery point any - I bought a Nissan to take off road. The Jeep is relegated to a touring vehicle only.

Use another shackle or loop the strap through itself.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I had thought of that but wasn't sure about two shackles together from a safety point of view.

[QUOTE=Hutch801;1153305]I had thought of that but wasn't sure about two shackles together from a safety point

To minimise shackles.....Pass the strap loop just through the shackle then pass the 2nd strap end one through the 1st strap loop and tighten by hand till snug around the shackle bow.
Obviously this can only be done on one of the vehicles involved - if the other vehicle has an eye type recovery point you still need one Bow shackle on this eye. If it has a hook no shackles are required.
After recovery is complete the looped strap end will be very tight on the bow but should work loose with a bit of work. Some people place a short length of thick rope or a roll of something thick like a newspaper, through the loop to help when loosening it. I just never seem to have a newspaper handy at these times - and SWAMBO won't let me use the Woman's day after I wrecked the last one - but I could carry a piece of rope in the recovery kit.

I have the ECB bar fitted to my 2014 GC and it too has two recovery hooks to the bar. As with the ARB, they are not "officially" rated, however the mob who fitted the bar assured me if the hook breaks, it is warrantied. Apparently all to do with legal obligations.

Yeh, the legal eagles have to keep manufacturers safe from litigation. Check out photos of the ARB bar and "tow" point & safety/legal sticker.
