Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I like the bracing across to the cross-member, should give it a bit more strength for lateral force. But yeah the chief ones look better....

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

That part of the basic design is a rip-off of the mounting system for the Jeep Australia hook.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I'd be worried the welds could give way. It looks like it was just mashed together in an afternoon.

I like the fact the Chief's are solid pieces of steel.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

It certainly makes sense that if you can achieve a workable design without welds then that's the best way to go.

Old Fart 4WD 101 was always that recovery points should be cast or HT bolted, not welded. I was inclined to disagree as a rule, as welding can be ultra strong. However I also appreciate that it's hard to determine the quality of a weld... well, until it has broken anyway. So the "rule" has validity of sorts.

I expect (hope?) that this stuff is being fabricated by a coded welder, or at least someone who could pass a relevant code.

At the least, it's good there's some competition in the market. The price is definitely more in line with typical expectations.

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

I'm also pleased there's some good Aussie friendly discussion going on. I get tired of being left with nothing to read about except "chrome vs murdered" and other trivia!

Cheers,
Steve

Re: No tow hooks? Front Recovery Soluition help

Haha, too true Steve.

I agree with you that good welds are generally ultra strong. But as you said, if you can get away with no welds then the better.
They less something has to be bent, moulded, the stronger it usually is.

There price is definitely far more palatable though. $300 for a set vs $500 is easier to swallow and justify to the mrs.

The picture of the right hand hook has a nasty looking cut edge to the vertical support.
Looks like someone has cut it with a hacksaw and not cleaned up the surface.
I know it's only $300 but for the sake of an extra 2mins on a bench grinder you could have a much smoother face and quality appearance.

Call me old fashioned, but I like machined goods to look machined..
