Re: Off Road 18"s

Fair comment Fireball... pretty much every mod I did on my Prado to improve it off road cost me at the bowser. Personally I think there's a value in keeping your off-road tyres for trips, but it's at the expense of the initial buy-in cost of a second set plus the PITA factor of changing them over for trips away. Also, to be truly fair when doing a fuel cost analysis you really need to weigh in the additional cost of owning a second set of wheels and tyres. Most people could do something else with the $2k upwards required.

Only the individual can weigh this kind of equation up... but I agree there's definitely a cost in going to a more open tread pattern, and typically a cost in upsizing as well.

Clearly there's a cost in staking tyres too

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Off Road 18"s

Thanks Steve and others. I'm experiencing phantom problem with TOE (wheel alignment). At 3000km, alignment done, at 7000km, toe increased evenly on both left an right, front toe increased total 22mm, rear toe increased total 11m; alignment done again, after 200km (checked today actually), front toe increased by 11mm, rear toe decreased a bit by 1mm. Dealer checked everything and can't find any fault. Camber, caster changed slightly within normal range.

Total driving to date has been on highway, no pothole/hit kerb, neither off road. Bad luck that I have TOE with invisible legs wandering by itself. Has anyone ever heard of this kind of problem? I simply can't afford replacing tyres every 7000km.

Do you have the 275/65/18 on the steel spare, or another Laredo wheel? With my BFG 265/65/18's (which although nominally smaller seem to be the same width as yours - certainly the tread width is the same), on a steel wheel it fits, but the Laredo wheel does not, because the spokes hold if up because there is a "lump" in the floor of the wheel well. It would fit spokes up, but that has other complications.

Re: Off Road 18"s

This came up recently in the main AU thread mmcrh, but I think perhaps warrants starting a new one dedicated to it. Now there is a TSB regarding alignment settings, though there's nothing to acknowledge or address a shift in settings over time. Yours is significant and quick to occur, so something is definitely UTS. If a dealer did your alignment, I'd be reading up on the Uconnect setting then taking the recently released TSB data to a specialist aligner. I really think the current tech must be ballsing up the job for what you're experiencing to occur. Maybe they're trying to set the Quadralift on "wheel alignment" when the door is open or something else equally dumb?

Good luck,
Steve

I dropped a 275/65R18 Coopers AT Max in the wheel well on the 10 spoke alloy rim, face up, and it doesn't fit. Floor sticks up a couple inches.

Currently I still have the original tyre on the steel rim in there, but the diameter is too far out to use it.

The BFG 265/65 is 802mm diameter, the Coopers I have are 818mm. Not sure how close the size needs to be to use it.....

Note that a 265/60R18 on an alloy wheel will not fit the spare wheel well but a 265/60R18LT on an alloy wheel just fits if the cubbies are removed. Passenger tyres bulge much more than the same sized LT tyres.

I actually gave the alignment TSB to the dealer, and they aligned it accordingly at aero mode. The dealer reported the case to Chrysler for advice, let's wait and see how it pans out.

Aero mode makes sense. That's where the wheel alignment matters most.

Re: Off Road 18"s

Well I've finally got myself a full set of 5 (plus an extra) brand new 2014 Laredo rims.

I'm now in the process of deciding on tyres, and there's a lot to sift through on this thread.

Not in a real hurry to get them as I won't be going off road for a few months so I may even look at importing some.

No. Mine are brand new without tyres and TPMS, still in their boxes too.
