Re: Off Road 18"s

My tyre placard only lists the size tyre fitted as standard, as ordered.
I assume that if you ordered it with ORA pack and the 18's then the placard would state that.

Well thats was my concern Matty, if they have brought in some new rule that we are not aware of it may effect a lot of people that have changed from the 20" down to 18" worst being is they wont be aware that there is an issue until it is too late and a insurance claim get rejected.
He did mention that there were some vehicles out now that had a number of tyres listed in the compliance sticker???

I dont want to hijack Steve's great thread too much, I will go back and get some more details as soon as I can.
We can then confirm either way

Re: Off Road 18"s

Hmmm... the different placard is a nice curved ball... I noticed it when I bought the Grand and got my 18"s sorted. However unless someone can bring up official data that there's some pertinent difference between the suspension geometry, stability programming, blah, etc... there's not going to be any insurance claims rejected. There has to be grounds. Now the vehicle is identical whether fitted with 18"s or 20"s out of the factory. Mr. Plod might have a different story, but I reckon you'd have to be a total dick to end up defected for it. If roadside problems worry you, just remove the placard and order one... they must be available for panel repair purposes.

Bear in mind, a vehicle that came with 20"s is allowed to travel on the shitty 18" spare up to 110km/h. Unless you're in the Northern Territory... that's as fast as you're allowed to drive the vehicle anyway.

It's a technicality... and quite arguably correct... but I'm calling it a nothing-burger in practice. Obviously if you choose to tow the line, you'd need to get an Engineer to endorse the change.

Cheers,
Steve

EDIT: Looked at the awful spare... it's good for 120km/h.

Agreed that you would have to be a total dick for Mr. Plod to even notice it.

My concern is the Insurance company and how they love to find any little thing they can to reject paying out on a claim.
It is a hell of a lot of money to loose if something was to happen

Is the information only on the sticker or is it noted in the VIN details?
Could it be as simple as getting a new sticker that would make the problem disappear?

Re: Off Road 18"s

Mark if the insurance aspect remains a concern, why not ring them and casually ask if you can list a set of "very practical" 18"s for bush work on the policy. If they accept...

Several years ago as part of a research project I heard directly from the Senior Underwriter at a major insurance company that they will have no interest in stuff like your wheels, suspension mods, etc unless a Police investigation states that they were a contributing factor to an accident. Since then I have read a lot in forums about concerns with claims being declined, but is this really happening out there? Personally I have not heard one instance, and I've hung around some "big modification" crew. Furthermore, how would this wheel argument stand with the Ombudsman or in Court based on the type of points raised in my last post? I think the insurers would end up looking like fools for trying it on, and the PR would be like a train wreck.

It'd be interesting to hear from Wade. I think he might have a story extremely relevant to this discussion. WadeAU??

Re: Off Road 18"s

Oh, last thing before retiring my mildly sunburnt self for the night... don't Jeep dealers do 18" swaps for buyers who can't wait for an ORA optioned Limited or Overland to materialise? I'm pretty sure that the offer was made to me...

They were going to swap my 20's for 18's even though it was not possible to get the ORA package on the Summit.
So was shocked to be told it couldnt be done yesterday afternoon by the tyre shop

Re: Off Road 18"s

The pdf above states you will be ok with the wheel change. Print it out and show the tyre shop if you are worried.

Is the brake setup different than the Laredo 18 inch setup? If not it is a standard tyre combination for the jeep.
