Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

More noise 40 to 80 kph, gets lost after that, we have about 7500 k on them now and they seem much quieter but maybe we have got used to it. So far I am very happy and feel more confident I regard to sidewall damage. Cornell's in nsw them for $345 a tyre which is about what you would pay from tire rack with freight. Cost me $100 to get them to Melbourne and $80 to,fit 5 at bayside jeep frankston. Done everything we have asked of the m so far.

Our GC has met every challenge to date (36000ks since December) and not needed rescuing once, yet! The suspension lift, bash plates, rock rails, ecb bar and bf Goodrich tyres have all been winners. No complaints either over our national luna 60 litre fridge, 75 amp thumper extra battery or our Uniden radio and smoothtalker 3G aerial for our iPhone.

To date our jeep has been to the flinders ranges, Oonadatta Track, Ayers Rock, crossed the Nullabor and travelled Vic high country without an issue other than a key lockout!

Lessons, with no snorkel, tape up around the passenger side of the bonnet and headlight to keep out the water, check your rubber drain plugs on the battery compartment underneath before crossings as they get ripped out and clean the air and cabin filter!

More photos to come.
Hi, I have a Rhino rack like yours that used to be on my Nissan Patrol. What cross rails do you have. It want to fit these to my new Overland, due in under 2 weeks.

The racks are the Thule aero bars, all works really well, we keep all the bedding and excess clothes on the rack in the roof bag so hardly any weight up high.

OK so the Thule Aero bars are compatable with the Rhino tray. Thanks for that .

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Whoops, after 40000 trouble free travel including most of the 4wd drives the strezlecki track has bitten our jeep!! After conquering big red at birdsville, driving the birdsville track and 3/4 of the strezlecki track we were undone by a large bull dust hole. So, with our GC listing to the left we crept back the 300k to lyndhurst with a severely bent front strut mount that was rubbiing nicely on the front axle, what a lovely sound!! 300 k at 50/60 k is not fun. After checking the car and talking to our dealer we are on the way back to Melbourne, slowly, were a new strut will be fitted on Monday, only $250 and in stock! Well done jeep. Not sure if I can talk my wife into driving back to innaminka to finish our planned trip next week. Cant complain, over 40,000k this year. I will, post more photos to photbucket next week and will add the bent strut photo tonight.

http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/...ps27e8b301.jpg

The strut in the photo is meant to be straight, and nowhere near the body. You can just see the shiny section on the axle where it is rubbing. Terrible noise for anyone with any mechanical empathy.

Ha ha, that might cost a lot more! Fingers crossed the 900k from Clare to Melbourne is without excitement!

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Hi Hickers,
What a fantastic trip.shows Jeep do have what it takes to do the top end and centre.i HAVE MOVED FROM toyotas to Jeep and have been extremely pleased to date.
If I can ask do you have 18'S 20 inch rims.
Bit of a discussion of ours about tyre and rim size. Doesnt really matter on Fraser Island but going to the centre is a different story.
Regards
and thanks for the trip photos.

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Made it home, hurt every time we went over a bump and we had to hear the grind of metal on metal.
Wheels are 18 inch with 265 65 18 bf Goodrich ta ko light truck tyres, spare fits well just and you pick up 13 mm of extra ground clearance.
Didn't need it in the end but Cornell's were happy to freight additional tyres to me if we had to! Mind you that can take two weeks in central Australia !
If we do the Simpson next year I will take a spare strut and rear shock plus a sat phone, not good when you have a problem when out of phone range!
Our travels this year prove you can take a GC anywhere the rest go, except deep water, someone please make a snorkel and a winch bar.

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Brilliant trip. I haven't commented earlier, less you would see my jealousy. Now that I am over it, I can say congrats.
Really looking forward to more pics when you get the chance.
Reminds me, I noticed a little dust on one of my wheel arches yesterday, so need to dust it.

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Thanks. Dust, don't talk about dust ! on our last morning camped on the strezlecki at montcollina bore we were hit by a dust storm as we were packing up. We had been so careful to keep as much dust out as possible and in less than a minute everything inside the car was coated with fine white dust!
I think the next trip will be to Dargo where we can camp on the grass not in the dirt!
