Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Hickers,
You've certainly packed it in this year...

Can I ask what navigation you are using??? Did notice the screen in your pics.

We plan on doing the Simpson next year...will run the van to Birdsville and head across to Mt Dare and back just because we like it out there. Been across and back a number of times in previous Patrols, it will be an interesting comparison.

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

hi running memory maps on the iPad using the free topo 250,000, its old but so are most the tracks!!! you do have to remember to download your planned route before losing mobile coverage though and not to clear the cache!! envy you re the simpson, when we crossed big red all i wanted to do was keep going!! i will need to find an extra tyre and rim for that adventure though. perhaps next year.

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Thanks for that, we use Mud maps on the iphone becaue we are a bit Apple oriented, my 20 year old Garmin GPS is too long in the tooth nowadays - although over the years we haven't found many tracks that aren't on it. The dash mount bracket eventually wore out from the pounding it got....
Was actually shopping for an Ipad today - the 3g version that has the inbuilt GPS. I'll see how Mudmaps transfers over and mb look at Memory Maps as well - the reviews weren't too friendly and put me off a little - if you find the free basemap OK that may make all the difference.
I've almost given up on getting hold of an extra set of rims and tyres - fitted 265x60x18 Geolandar AT's yesterday - my local Bob Jane wouldn't sell me the BFG's in 65 profile because the extra diameter isn't legal here in QLD. First time I've ever encountered that!

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Hi
there is new national standard rules in relation to lifting 4wd vehicles that allow for an increase in the diameter of the wheel provided it does not exceed a set limit. (50mm?) Qld should, or will be running under those rules as i believe all states have signed of to remove the silly situation where a car is legal in victoria but not Qld etc. good luck with your navigation quest, they all seem a little ordinary. We like the big mud map topo because it provides a "big picture" and tracks our travels plus allows for entering waypoints, it cost nothing so cant lose! mid you i just purchased a navman my escape navigator ($400) when ours died on the way up the qld coast which has hema 4wd maps included and now i am home i realise it is not mac compatible. oh well im sure it will sell on gumtree at the right price!!

Awesome adventure Hickers. I'll take note of your lessons learned, as we are preparing for our big trip next year.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

FYI, posted our Navman Hema GPS in the "for sale" section if anyone is interested but you will need a PC not a mac for map updates!!

on hold for a fellow WK2 owner.

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Awesome vid...and a very interesting soundtrack...I taught my self how to play that tune "Moodlight Sonata" ...note perfect...at the age of 9 from an old 33 1/3 record of my parents that led to 20 years or so as a semi pro keyboard player...sorry about the trivea. Awesome vid...makes me want to pull stumps and see it for myself!

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Moonlight was my pick after youtube canned my original choice for copyright reasons! heading off for four days of camping at Tidal river, no 4wd work but some great walks, and it won't be hot and dusty!! looks like i will have some contract work for the next 4 weeks to Innaminka looking unlikely until next winter, too bloody hot!

Re: Off road photos, Cape York and beyond!

Hi Hickers ... Aside from the bent front strut (which in that situation can happen to any 4by), how did the rest of the GC generally hold up? Any new noises, rattles, etc.
