One thing though, unless you're into fine electronic work probably don't cut the cable out of the camera. The wire is typically thin as hair and can be extremely hard to reterminate well.

Just use an RCA plug soldered on to the factory wiring after cutting the Weatherpack connector off. It's unshielded to the front anyway from appearances. If you can't solder, you could use one end of an AV interconnect, plus an electrical screw block to make the join.

Alternatively... liquid solder, Scotch Locks, twist and tape, etc... bearing in mind that they may not last as long and may need another visit in the future.

Cheers,
Steve
Sounds as easy as putting together an Ikea Flat Pack !

Re: Rear safety camera

If you can strip the insulation off a wire and do up a screw... you'll be fine. I can mock up an example of the method for you to copy.

If you want to try the camera, buy it. We'll help you install it, OK?

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Barboots

Thanks for the reply.

I am in "negotiations" with the Dealer / Chrysler to come to an amicable resolution.

Will post again if I need to go to the alternative plan.

Spoke to my dealer yesterday, he gave me no real option other than to go after market. Jeep supply the camera which they then fit. Apparently is okay during the day, however doesn't work well at night due to glare from either the number plate light or reversing light. Dealer wasn't sure. So will have to look around and see what is on offer.

Apparently the "genuine" is not just the camera, but the whole trim fitting as well.

Seen some "Mopar" parts on the net for around $220, but only up to MY13.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/like/2714...=true&lpid=107

Another on the net is this one.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Auto-Bac...=mtr#vi-ilComp

Still looking "locally" at the moment.

Re: Rear safety camera

Yep, "genuine" would really mean the Limited / Overland part, which does include the garnish surrounding it. The price you've found doesn't seem like a bad deal given it's a known quality.

The AU Laredo "genuine aftermarket" camera is cut in to the liftgate garnish... sometimes quite badly. It's this aspect that would cement my decision if I was facing it.

Otherwise eBay, Amazon and Ali-Whatever have loads of horses to bet on.

Cheers,
Steve

I all honesty, id probably go with an aftermarket camera. The one fitted to our overland is ok, but I wouldn't go as far as saying its good. I fitted an aftermarket kenwood camera to my other car, and it is far superior in picture quality to the Jeep.

Does anyone know how the active part (where the grid lines turn with the steering) works? Does the camera get this from the canbus?

Re: Rear safety camera

I'm going to suggest that it's overlaid on the image in the main U-connect unit.

Cheers,
Steve

Yeah it might well be. My limited experience with reverse cameras, suggests that the grid lines are camera initiated. On my kenwood one, I can adjust the length of lines move them side to side and even take them away. I can also adjust the amount of fishbowl effect, obviously due to the wide angle lens. The camera also gives me the option of different views. All adjusted via a menu that appears on the head unit (dvd player) once the camera was plugged in and turned on.

Has anyone checked the type of connection on the uconnect? Is it RCA?

Re: Rear safety camera

Static lines are a common internal camera feature... sure. Repositionable lines and various zooms wouldn't be complex to incorporate. However feeding a steering angle signal back into the camera seems a backward approach from an electronics perspective... not to say it's inconceivable though. That said, I'll put ten bucks on it being in the head unit.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Rear safety camera

The camera that is fitted into the laredo by the dealers & supplied by jeep aus is not the same as for the other models, ie camera cut in to tailgate plastic rather than a wholly integrated unit. The brochure and advertising states that the laredo should have a camera that is a 'parkview' registered trademark system, the same as the other models, ie not just a camera and not taking up to seven months to fit!! I think it is time for consumer affairs to get involved.
