Re: Rear safety camera

Cars gone in for camera fitment, have been assured it is the new "improved" camera. Allegedly the same as the limited etc. Have a new Cherokee as loaner.... nice, but a grand it ain't!!

Not sure Rocksfly, I don't have a camera, so its all getting fitted from scratch. They had the camera when I bought the car and were awaiting the loom to arrive, so perhaps it is different?

Re: Rear safety camera

If you were looking to gain some efficiency on the swap, splicing the new camera onto the old loom would save heaps of time. There's a fair amount of trim removal required to run the new loom.

The Limited / Overland camera (which I gather is the part being fitted) uses a signal +, signal -, and shield. The dodgy local Laredo cam appears to be a common signal and shield arrangement. It's possible that the potential performance attainable from the new camera could be diminished by not cabling it as intended. Whether that's ultimately the case would require close comparison, as the difference may only be evident when certain other circuits are active.

I seem to recall some people getting camera image interference on the Mark 1 Laredo cams from their mobile phones, for example.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks Barboots for that info....I'm not tech savvy.
Are you Inferring that the splicing into the existing loom will be a cost saving exercise and that the picture/image could be of a lesser quality than is likely if the new loom is installed?

Should I be insisting that the new loom is part of the change out. Seems like most are getting the new loom.

Bloody confusing

Re: Rear safety camera

I can't say for sure mate... I'm just putting my observations out there. It's important to appreciate that the camera element performance is responsible for 9x% of the difference between the images.

The cabling is a very small percentage. Also bear in mind I've not had a hands-on with the Mark 1 Laredo camera loom, however it didn't appear to offer the same signal protection that I've seen first hand in my Overland.

Maybe just hint to your dealer that you're kind of onto it, and have reservations about the loom not being changed out with the camera as there is potential for interference. That way, you can offer up some "I told you so" in the unlikely event that you have issues.

To be honest, I think it'll be OK. My caravan camera is signal and shield only and so far it has been free of noise on the U-Connect screen, but I've not used it for more than a few minutes.

Cheers,
Steve
