I was waiting until more cameras are fitted to see what others are getting. Which reminds me I will post some pics of mine.

My camera looks down too much, but have to admit have found it really helpful when backing up with the tow ball and getting under the caravan hitch.

We just put an order in before Christmas and are expecting to take delivery end of this month.

Does anyone know if the Laredo's are still being fitted with dodgy cameras? I guess we'll find out soon...

I read somewhere the dealer fitted cameras on Laredos were limited to only the first 2000 cars?

Re: Rear safety camera

All Laredos sold in Australia come with the camera. There is no cutoff for the first 2000 or anything like that. It's an advertised "feature" of the car. They are a dealer fit item and are not of the best quality picture wise but far from "dodgy". I got mine in the other day and am just glad I can see behind the car easier now. I wish the guidance lines would have been displayed but you get what you pay for I guess.....

I agree with many who say that for the money these cars cost, they should have come with reverse sensors and a camera standard, but then they are only a 30k car in the US too...

Re: Rear safety camera

Sorry I should have been clearer - yes I know the Aus spec Laredo's come reverse parking camera but wanted to clarify if all of them are meant to be dealer fitted, or if it was the only 2000 vehicles due a supply shortage at launch.

ie, will the Aus Laredo's ever come with the camera factory fitted?

No they won't because they aren't made in the factory with one at all.

On a similar note though had a look at a mates 2012 model with dealer fit camera and the picture quality is much better AND it has the grid lines on it!

I'm guessing it is the camera itself that projects the lines, so I will ring my dealer and find what's the go with that I think....

I had an phone charging off the 12volt socket inside the cubby and it was interfering with the camera image.

Re: Rear safety camera

I picked up our Laredo MY14 last September and it came fitted with the camera by the dealer. I have the grid lines displaying on mine so not sure why we are seeing different camera's. The biggest problem is the dynamic range of the camera. It has no night visibility at all and any sign of the sun hitting it and the camera is blinded ( probably due to the excessive fish eye ). I don't mind a wide view, but to lose 1cm at the top and bottom of the screen due to it being that wide it see's the top and bottom of the rear door. If i can't even have the main camera work my hopes of having the rear camera on the caravan hook into the screen is well and truly beyond hope for such a good car. Imagine how many people tow with this car and such a simple task as a second av input is likened to the task of flying to the moon. Love this car, but these muppets at jeep would have a monopoly the likes of toyota for the last however many decades if they could get their act together.

If anyone can show swapping the camera and also the addition of switching to a caravan camera I would be very interested.

Re: Rear safety camera

Having the ability to swap over to a remote, cabled caravan camera isn't going to be anything difficult for a decent auto electronics establishment to set up. At the simple end, just cutting into the existing camera feed and inserting a "video switch" (*1) and then routing both cameras through that would do it. Towing? Manually switch over to van view. Improvements would include changing over all the proprietary connections instead of cutting int, or disassembling the video switch and hard-wiring to it. Of course the best installation would use a voltage controlled video switch, but you've got to wonder if the additional cost is worth it.

If you want to have a crack I'll help as much as possible.

Cheers,
Steve

*1 - Video Switch: previously found on maxxed out TVs which didn't have enough inputs for VCR, DVD, games, etc. Now usually two bucks at garage sales
