Rear tow hook OK for snatching?

Newbie question here, but has anyone used the rear tow hook for snatching?

Just looks a little weak compared with after-market type snatch hooks.

If you have a tow bar fitted i prefer to us that with a recover tounge in the towing slot asit spreads th load across the rear and both chasis rails

Thanks guys, currently don't have a tow bar and wanting to take it offroad with a friend 'hooked' left right and centre Wrangler.

Might get some of those Maxtraxx for now rather than use that tow hook if it's not really meaty enough.

Re: Rear tow hook OK for snatching?

I've seen a GC bogged on the beach snatched out using the rear hook - seemed ok.

Re: Rear tow hook OK for snatching?

Unless you go about recovery like a moron, that hook will do the job. Relax and enjoy your outing.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Rear tow hook OK for snatching?

White Hills? Yes mate... a long time back in my first Prado. I don't recall it being particularly heavy going, but it was skinny in a few places. The WA beaches can be quite changeable, and with the weather we've had it could be entirely different to even last fortnight.

My tip for a safe return is that unless you are with extremely competent support, if the beach is on much of a slope and the water is close-ish, call it off. This type of situation goes bad real quick. Oh, and back out... don't turn around until it's wide again.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Rear tow hook OK for snatching?

The rear recovery hook was designed and tested to the same specs at the front US recovery hook.
1.0 /1.5 GVW pull.
2.0 GVW pull with no separation.
0.9 GVW 90 deg outboard pull no separation.
0.5 GVW push/pull (BUX).

Re: Rear tow hook OK for snatching?

Even though I've got a tow bar, I've used the rear hook a couple of times (pulling out other vehicles of course). It was easier to just use the hook that's there than trying to remove the hitch. Just took it easy, no problems...

Re: Rear tow hook OK for snatching?

Whitehills is pretty easy, though a small section of beach was a bit washed out last time I went. We just cut up thru the dune tracks to go around it. For the easiest run down there, get on at Preston Beach, it's very easy going and a little less busy

Cheers, Simon
