Recommendations for a UHF CB Radio

So who is brave enough to be first in drilling a hole in their roof?

It probably is a good idea BUT it does mean that if the driver wants to talk they have to park off the road to do so legally ..... talking on a hand held mic brings the same penalty as talking on a mobile phone in Victoria ... and I suspect elsewhere too.

However, the PTT (Push To Talk) remote button on the GME 3420S is quite legal and the mic can also be used by the passenger.

Something to think about ... if you like driving ... and the safety of others you might like to consider a PTT option.

Regards

Rob

The only time I will be really talking on it would be when off road, even then I would leave to the passenger if one was on board

Re: Recommendations for a UHF CB Radio

I purchased the icom ic440n and RFI Explorist 3 & 6.5dbi UHF CB Antenna Package from Prestige communications in perth.
The icom is mounted under the passenger seat and when not in use it tucks away nicely so I dont have something hanging im the cabin.

Pretty happy with it so far, is clear, speaker is loud and it is easy to use.

I was looking at the GME ones but went with the Icom mainly because of the feedback on the quality of it and clarity from the unit.

Umm.....no it doesn't, they are exempt from that.

Taken from Vic Road Rule 300.

Note point 2.
300. Use of hand-held mobile phones
(1) The driver of a vehicle (except an emergency vehicle or police vehicle) must
not use a hand-held mobile phone while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary
but not parked, unless the driver is exempt from this rule under subrule (3).
Penalty: 2 penalty units.
Note Emergency vehicle, park and police vehicle are defined in the dictionary.
(2) In this rule—
mobile phone does not include a CB radio or any other two-way radio.
(3) This rule does not apply to a driver if the Corporation has, by notice in writing,
exempted the driver from subrule (1).

Correct. In Vic, they sure are exempt!

Re: Recommendations for a UHF CB Radio

I have a Icom IC-400pro installed in the passenger well (yes, bracket screwed to the side panel, sad about that). This also allows the unit to operate cooler.

Power is fed by tapping into the centre cigarette socket between the seats. This allows the UHF to be operated without the vehicle being on.

I also have a home made vertical dipole cut to quarter wavelength that sits in the A-pillar. Out of sight and can't be flogged or broken. I wasn't shooting for the moon or anything so I'm happy with that.

Did have a GME in another vehicle but wasn't to happy with the level of engineering with the unit and also it failed early in its life.

Re: Recommendations for a UHF CB Radio

GME remote head, box tucked away behind the dash, the plug just pops out beside the passengers seat.
