Reversing camera on whilst driving

I've always wanted to have the ability to be able to switch on the reversing camera whilst towing so I can keep an eye on whatever I'm towing from time to time.

Seems now I can (but only once, and I can't replicate it.....)

http://youtu.be/Gv7vGM6EXXo

PS. All hard buttons were non functioning, as was the touch screen. However I could still adjust the volume and track choice of the current album I was listening to on the HDD.

Edit....OK, why can't I embed the video?

Re: Reversing camera on whilst driving

Your video only showing as a link and not as playable on screen has to do with the URL you used.
There are/were 4 possible links.
The one provided when you upload, the one you get from an email of an upload, the one get from the SHARE option (what you have posted) below a video (all of these will not show as playable when posted), the direct link , which is what I used.
If you post the SHARE link into your browser, it will change it to the direct link URL.

Would be nice if you could even select rear camera without going into reverse.

Would be a nice feature in WA - you could measure the mm's of distance that all the FIFO's in holden utes leave when they tailgate at 100km/h

I just thought it was almost everyone over here!

There's not that many cars on the road in WA... it's just the way they are driven which makes the traffic mental. If there's no gaps, no one can change lanes without a shockwave running back down the road. It's quite obvious really.

How often do you see a gap in front of a car appear due to a vehicle exiting the lane, then immediately disappear as the driver behind makes a point of briskly accelerating then braking to close the gap? This should be 6 demerits and 6 months driving a Smart

Cheers,
Steve

Ah... Matty... isn't that a feature of your NavTV box???

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Reversing camera on whilst driving

Yes I do have the NavTV box installed, but I haven't got a video switcher or the AV loom installed, that became all a bit too hard...

I think you'll find that the additional hardware isn't required to get the Jeep's reverse cam happening while underway. It's required to get an alternate camera on the display.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Reversing camera on whilst driving

Matty I'm not sure if you drop in on the Caravaners Forum long running Jeep Grand Cherokee thread, but on page 204 there is a post from new member Peter4992 relating to your thoughts….
here's an extract
"This is my first post although I have read every post on this thread plus many other general caravan threads.
I have a dealer demo MY13 and like you am on the Sunshine Coast.

I have had my JGC since September and have carried quite a few mods etc.

I have changed the Jeep radio system for a Cartek complete GPS/radio/AV in etc unit and this works brilliantly. The main reason for this was that I am over having extra screens etc on the dash and I can also hook other cameras into the system.

I replaced the Jeep camera with another one and I have a relay which switches the caravan camera on when reverse is selected and the van hooked up. I can also switch the caravan camera on when driving to check what is happening behind."
……...End of extract.
i guess if you wanted to follow up for further info you could chase Peter up via a PM on that forum.
As an aside - i didn't think the Jeep radio could be changed - but someone out there has apparently achieved it!
John

Re: Reversing camera on whilst driving

Manual for NavTV AllGig states rear camera can be forced on any time by pressing the radio power button twice.

Just saying...

Ciao,
Steve

Re: Reversing camera on whilst driving

What??!!...............you want me to read the manual as well?.......

I must admit that after I removed the NavTV box a few months ago I decided to just fit it again before I went away without the modified AV harness and wasn't even aware of this feature.

Having said that, It happened by me touching the AUX soft key on the screen, not the power button, so who knows?

I'm not a manual reader either Matty, but I knew that the NavTV box would do that. Unfortunately I may not have downloaded the right manual to slap you in the face with!

For anyone following this jibber jabber, the NavTV box will (at least) enable any feature your system has functional, but unavailable in certain modes of operation. I'm waiting R&D... which IS a Jeep thing... so I can enter Nav destinations while moving, plus force enable the rear camera. The camera feed will have my own switching on it to view trailer cams when towing, though NavTV have a video switching box to do this also.

Cheers,
Steve
