Scratch and Dents

I have not washed the car for a few weeks because of the constant rain, so I have no idea when this happened, the car has been rain dirty. I was applying Rain-X this afternoon (I don't know how people can drive without it) and I noticed some scratches and mild dent.

Apart from a proper detailer / paint shop is there a way to get at least the scratches fixed? Would touch up paint do it, or would that simply look horrid and need a proper fix later?

Sorry, no banana for scale so I had to use the key.

There is a paintless repair place in Castle hill near the ford dealer. Normally they do small dings where the paint is not scratched but they did 2 small dings on my Alfa which also had paint scratched and I was surprised at what a good job they did. If i didn't point it out you would be hard pressed to notice.

Might be worth having a talk to them before taking matters into your own hands with touch up paint.

Like GMWK2 I personally I reckon touch up paint wouldn't do the job.

Weeks ago my daughter returned to her Mazda 2 in a car park to find the rear bumper carved up. Needless to say she wasn't happy, but contacted one of these franchised "come to you" bumper repair boys.
The guy did a great job, 3 hours, filled several scratches and dents, and resprayed the whole rear bumper. Excellent paint and colour match, looks like new. $330.
They will come and look at the job and quote first - maybe worth a suss out of what is available in your area just to see what they say.
Big call though to have a go at the bonnet, maybe try one of the magic touch up sticks.
Or take it out in the shrubbery and accumulate a few others so the ones you have now don't stand out.

Looking at the above program again, I can see why I passed on it first time. Those three problems in the pics would cost me at least $200 on top of the joining and annual fees. Plus the problem that my house is outside their service area so would need to be taken somewhere else and neither of our work places are suitable.
I don't think it would work out cost worthy. I will get some quotes to fix and go from there.

I am thinking that the whole bonnet and guard requires panelbeating and respray. OUCH! Touchup will look shite.
There is a paintless guy at Vineyard you might like to try, at least for an opinion. He is either on Park Rd or precision Place Vineyard. I have seen the sign as driving past.
Looks like someone has dropped something metallic on the car. That zigzag on the hood looks sus though.

Thanks Alan, I will drop by there on the way home.

Nothing in Park or Precision place.

Went past here again tonight, I wasn't blind, that is an empty building.

Couldn't see them, many places up there basically have no bloody signage.
I went around the corner to Nathans crash repair, panel beaters etc....
A proper quote is coming, but he thinks about $900. Full bonnet respray, then the guards need to be sprayed to blend the finishes, new badge, clips etc.........

At that price I will leave it for more damage.

That damage looks a bit suss, you would think you would have seen or heard something if it happened while driving, hopefully its not that sinister and a tree branch fell on it or something.

You should be able to find a good repairer at a good price. The paintless dent guys are incredibly talented these days, they would be my first try for a quote and if its possible to do.:)

I'm of to Taiwan tonight, when I get back next week I will go to the paintless guy.

Hi Snuke,
Another option to minimise the visual impact whilst you wait to repair. I have some scratch polish which I have used which may reduce the visual, I also have a dent less guy who is great and will send his details tonight when I get home. He is mobile and did a brilliant job on my guard.
Cheers

Ouch, screw that. Will be good to see what paintless say.
$90 for Jeep badge.

A tradie fell off our roof onto the bonnet of our mazda 3 a couple years ago. Bonnet was dented with the shape of his forearm, the paintless repair guy said too difficult to get straight, so went for a replacement bonnet.

I paid for the repair myself, then took it off the bill. $1400.

Guys do you reckon it's worth getting a touch up job or getting the whole fender done for a stone chip damage to the right front panel on a 5000km driven jgc 2014- maximum steel?, I mean this thing gouged the undercoat off.

Since I paid for some aftercare, they put some kind of color protectant, and they sent someone to do some touch up , he put some filler and painted over it and now looks like a glob sitting over the chip, I was advised that repainting the entire panel will not bond as well and will be clearly apparent in 12 months,

The only place I know of is the touch-up-guys in my town,

Pics would help, but if the undercoat is off, then respray may be best.

Sounds like a hack. If it can’t be done properly without respray, then the repairer if experienced should know and advise of this. This is why I didn’t bother with a paintless repairer, as I know my damage is too severe and needs slight panel reworking.

I was advised that repainting the entire panel will not bond as well and will be clearly apparent in 12 months,
What genius advised that? Someone with an invested interest in you not getting a respray? If you take it to a good body shop, then they are going to strip the fender bare and respray correctly, it’s not like you just getting a spray can from a paint shop and passing it over.
With my quote they said that the front guards would also need a slight spray to help blend what has to be slightly different finish. I will get mine done soon. The earlier it is done the better the paint all matches up.

The only place I know of is the touch-up-guys in my town,
FYI, if you put your location (rough or accurate) in your profile details, then we can all see where you are and can give further advise.
See how mine says Sydney, Aus, allypally has NW Sydney, Mark doesn’t has anything as he trying to hide and not let anyone know he is in Perth.

Hey SNUKE have you tried Opticoat or anyone else tried this Opti Coat official dealer Gold Coast

they are everywhere is Australia I have heard good things anyone else tried Opticoat before ?? my SRT8 2014 has only 200klms on the clock and have booked it in next Thursday it will take the guy about 6hrs and that's to do the whole outside of the car and all the Spyder Monkey wheels and also to protect all of the inside of my interior at a cost of $850 and that's for 5yr warranty and if I spend another $200 I get lifetime warranty...

Any thoughts on this guys would be helpful , just curious I never hear anyone getting this done on there Beastly machines on this forum or other SRT8 forums

When you get a chance to take some better pics, also take one from further back to help provide positional relevance. If you just do a close up pic, it can’t provide context for severity.
If you look at my pics, you will notice the first one is over a metre back from the area so you can see the windscreen etc.. and help provide context and scale for the position and severity of the problem.
The key fob was used to help provide scale on the closer pics.

So one to provide contextual data, then a few closer in on a couple of angles to account for the effect that light has on pics.

Judging by that image alone, you basically have 2 options. Remove that paint with some thinners gently and then get some colour matched paint, preferably from an automotive paint supplier and using a very fine artists brush apply 3 or 4 coats into the chip, allowing each to flash off for 10 minutes or so.
Paint isn't a good filler so it will still be there on close inspection, but not really noticeable from several feet away.
If that type of repair isn't acceptable then the only other alternative is into a panel shop to have it sanded out and the panel resprayed and blended.
