Spring Break weekend trip EOI

Hi all, for the past 3 or 4 years whilst I owned one, I have organized a Xmas in July trip with fellow Ford Territory owners. I followed on from Allypally who was one of the first to arrange such a trip when he also owned one. These trips were usually a weekend away somewhere which included some down time to relax but also a day trip off road somewhere to enjoy our cars. Yes the Territory is not a real 4wd but that never stopped us having fun with them. Sadly the numbers of people attending diminished over the years to be just a few of us and on the last trip there was 2 Territories, Ally in his Jeep and another friend Mark^^ in his Evoque (also a Territory owner).

Links to last few trips: (note my username in the Ford forum is FPVF6X201)

With the gentle push from Mark^^ who has just done a Tagalong trip I am now seeking EOI of doing something similar with the Jeep crowd (SRT & regular Jeeps included). Given that we are now part of the American brand we have decided to rename the trip, and therefore the timing, to Spring Break, and move it to September when the weather is (hopefully) a bit warmer. I don't know how many of the other SRT owners will take their car off road but i'm willing to be the first if needed lol. I'll post this in the Sydney SRT Club thread too.

So there is another tagalong trip happening on Sunday the 21st September.

Tag-A-Long 4WD Tours - Simmo's Offroad Tours

The way we usually do these trips is head off on the Friday, stay at whatever accommodation we can arrange, do the drive day on Saturday, stay overnight again, then on the Sunday check out and do a small drive or just relax and head on home. Obviously this trip would be relax on the Saturday, check out Sunday morning then do the tagalong trip on the Sunday.

It would be a great day out for all Jeep owners that want to take their cars off road in a safe and reasonably easy trip (though maybe a bit nerve racking in my SRT lol) and would also provide a chance to put names to faces.

Mark^^ has found two accommodation options for us already depending on your budget.

http://www.sofala.net.au/Home.aspx

Or

http://bathurst-panorama-holiday-park.nsw.big4.com.au/accommodation-and-pric

This of course is aimed mostly at the Sydney owners, but there is nothing stopping others from making the trip to Sydney to join in (Mark^^ is from the ACT has been to every trip so far!) Mark and I will probably go regardless but it would nice to have my new Jeep friends come along too. Who's up for it?

Rob

EDIT, just discovered you cant open the Ford links unless your a member, sorry about that.

I'll need to check dates but I'm interested.

Are you able to give some more detail on the actual trip route?

Re: Spring Break weekend trip EOI

Found this (old) article about Turon River which is close by. I reckon the SRT could handle the tracks/rivers in the vid half way down the page

The 4×4 Guys » Turon River – NSW

This guy seems like a tool, but the track he uses looks easy enough.

Re: Spring Break weekend trip EOI

Hi GMWK2 I will shoot off an email to Simmo (aka Greg) tonight and ask if he can give me a rough idea of the trip on Sunday 21 September. I think he usually waits to closer to the trip and has a sense of everyone's experience and the cars they drive, before settling on an exact trip plan.

To be exact I did a Tag-a-long trip with him last weekend to Glow Worm Tunnel, Lost City in the Gardens of Stone National Park and the Newnes State Forrest in the Blue Mountains there were only 4 cars: Simmo in his Prado; a Pajero; a Lexus truck; plus me in the Evoque. Simmo did most of his reconnoitre from 4am the morning of our drive - as it had rained on Saturday and he wanted to assess the puddles and the state of the track. So he is pretty dedicated to his work.

Simmo has assured me that this trip in September to Hill End and Sofala is classed as generally "Easy" (easier than the one I did in July to Newnes) and is well suited for my class of vehicle (lower 4x4's such as the Evoque) - but he says he "always has a few optional tracks for those that want to have a bit more fun!"

So this trip should be OK for those with lots of clearance and those like me who are 'clearance challenged' but very capable vehicles.

I have put up some photos of the trip I did with Simmo on 27 July on the Evoque forum at: tag-a-long tour in the Evoque - Range Rover Evoque Forums You don't have to join to view the thread and photos.

I will update when I get a response from Simmo.

As I live 'near the ACT' but in NSW! my plans involve driving up to Bathurst (where I expect the trip to start) on Friday, as Rob says do something less planned on the Saturday, do the tag-a-long to Hill End and Sofala on the Sunday and drive home on the Monday. Sydney folk might be OK driving home on the Sunday after the tag-a-long trip, but its a bit far for me.

Re: Spring Break weekend trip EOI

Nice idea Rob. It's always a surprise when I click on a link to a forum and get logged in automatically. Apparently I joined that Ford Forum in March; must have been to get the procedure to turn of the seatbelt chime.

The Jenolan trip looked good, I was up there 5 years ago this coming weekend for our 10 year anniversary.

Mark, if you got your Evoque into that water crossing (tag along tour) then you're ballsier than me.

That weekend is out for me, enjoy yourselves.

Should I hang my head in shame that the idea of staying in a tent it off putting now? I've gotten too soft.

Who is staying in a tent? I am staying here

http://www.sofala.net.au/Home.aspx

Or here

http://bathurst-panorama-holiday-park.nsw.big4.com.au/accommodation-and-pric

neither offer tents but warm accommodation in buildings.

Re: Spring Break weekend trip EOI

Ok here is further infor from Simmo who runs the tag along trip

Here's an information sheet for you for my upcoming Tag-a-Long Tour.

If you are planning to stay at Chesleigh, that's no dramas - we can meet up with you on the way to Hill End if you like...

I've pencilled you in for up to 4 vehicles; but please let me know your final number as soon as you can (I might end up running another tour the Sunday before - depending on numbers)

Here’s some important information for my upcoming 4WD Tag-a-Long Tour – exploring the Hill End region.

This Tag-a-Long Tour is rated “Easy” to “Medium” and is well suited for stock standard 4WD and AWD vehicles, with plenty of optional tracks along the way for a bit of fun!

I am really looking forward to it actually. I’m planning a good mixture of bush roads/4WD tracks, great scenery, and a little bit of Aussie history thrown in there too.

If we can all meet at the Bathurst Visitor Information Centre, Sydney Road, Bathurst, by 9.00 am on Sunday 21st September. If you are coming in to Bathurst, from Sydney, it is on your left hand side, adjacent to soccer fields, and opposite the Bathurst Showground.

Although I make every effort to ensure your safety, four wheel driving can be a dangerous activity, so please drive responsibly, obey road-rules, and drive within your limits at all times.

Please have a full tank of fuel, drinking water/medicines/snacks etc, and ensure your vehicle is mechanically sound. Check your vehicle handbook if you need to; and know how to engage 4WD or AWD, and engage any other driver assist technologies (where available).

Importantly, please ensure you can locate your vehicle’s recovery/tow hooks at the front and back of your car, and bring any recovery gear you may have (snatch straps, rated bow-shackles etc) - just in case you have to be “recovered” or towed. This is unlikely, but possible; depending on what optional tracks you may attempt on the day.

Please ensure your tyres are in sound condition and are properly inflated (including the spare). Bring a tyre pressure gauge with you (and your portable air compressor if you happen to own one).
If you have a UHF radio in your vehicle, fantastic, but I’ll have some handheld radios for those that don’t (UHF 15). Please don’t be bashful, jump on the radio and ask questions/call out if you are unsure of anything or have something to say. No such thing as a dumb question and somebody else in the convoy make have a bloody good answer for us all!

We will reach the township of Hill End about lunch time. You may want to grab some lunch at the historic Royal Hotel, grab a bite from the General Store opposite, or simply bring your own lunch/snacks on the day if you prefer.

Whilst at Hill End, we’ll also visit the National Parks & Wildlife Information Centre, and Hill End Museum.

We’ll spend the rest of the afternoon exploring some pretty fun 4WD tracks down by the Turon River, returning to Bathurst in the late afternoon, about 5.30pm or so.

The cost of this Tag-a-Long Tour is $150 per vehicle, which includes NSW National Parks fees and entrance fees to the Hill End museum. I don’t have “eftpos” or anything “fancy” like that – so please just fix me up on the day.

Are you still interested? Mark^^ will chime in soon but I think we need to confirm numbers for the tagalong as well as accommodation.

Is no one else keen to have some fun in their Jeep? Or are they all Toorak Tractors lol.

Re: Spring Break weekend trip EOI

So the proposed trip is:

Friday 19 Sept : drive to Chesliegh at Sofala for afternoon look around the property, have dinner and then sit around the camp fire till bed time.

Saturday 20 Sept: start with home made breakfast, spend the day on the farm property - activities as per the website: horse riding, bush walking, relaxing in the spar or sitting on the veranda relaxing, or go on a drive somewhere. Lunch and Dinner provided and more camp fire activities during the evening and into the night.

Sunday 21 Sept we will meet up with the tag-a-long group after they meet at Bathurst Visitor Information Centre, by 9.00 am. We then drive on to Hill End arriving about lunch time. Where we will grab some lunch at the historic Royal Hotel, or from the General Store opposite, or simply bring your own lunch/snacks on the day if you prefer.

Choise then to drive home of do what you want.

I have spoken to the people at Chesliegh and they have pencilled in for three rooms with a 4th a possibility. Cost is $150 per adult per day and between $55 and $95 per day for a child. This covers all meals including Friday evening, breakfast – lunch – dinner on Saturday and for us breakfast on Sunday.

I found out this is the first weekend of the school holidays and so there was no interest in discussing a discount as well as the small number we now have. I will need to confirm numbers in the next day or so.

Re: Spring Break weekend trip EOI

Well did the trip with my mate Mark^^ in his RR Evoque and 5 other proper 4wd's. Had a good time but would have liked more off road stuff rather than the dusty tracks we spent hours on. The SRT & the RR did everything the others did and easily too. There were a few surprised faces on the 4wd folk.

Our group:

The result of the dusty tracks:

Some of the surprised 4wders (and my son saying it's an SRT, not a Jeep lol):

Where the 4wd's went, so did I:

Made it up (steeper than it looks!):

That was Sunday just gone....... tonight I took it to the drags and ran a 13.1
