I'm probably better off getting the iPad mini wifi with a standalone nav app with pre loaded maps. Im thinking the iPad might be a little cumbersome strapped to the dash.
This wasn't my idea.....but it works great for us. See VMS 4x4 GPS units
The ipad is very handy travelling (hot spotted to the phone from time to time for internet access) and the big screen for navigation is brilliant from the drivers view as it takes only a split second to glance and orient.
We've travelled about 5000k with it sitting on non slip mat on the console (doesn't budge) and my wife just picks it up to play from time to time or put under the seat when we stop.
The gps is built in the 3g n wifi models and we don't run a sim card so all the navigation is off line and the maps in memory.
The app we use is Mudmaps HD which comes with a package of on and off road maps.
So far we are more than happy with the maps and the way the app works, the gps has never lost signal in this location and accuracy when we check from time to time is between 5 and 10m.
No voice guidance turn by turn or other bells and whistles that a nav unit will provide though.
Likely there are other tablet options out there.
