Tailgate glass lift faulty

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has had trouble with the glass lift on the tailgate of an Overland, my local dealer is going to have a look later in the week but dosen't leave us with much confidence as they have never seen this problem and don't seem to have a clue what the problem could be. The problem started with the glass open light randomly coming on as we are driving and us having to pull over and close the glass which had opened by itself, now the glass has stopped opening altogether from both the inside switch and the tailgate switch. Any help or any info from somone that has had this problem would be great!!!

Re: Tailgate glass lift faulty

What inside switch is there for the flipper glass ?
It sounds like a faulty switch (rubber button) more than anything else. I would expect it to be a simple fix. Most dealers have not seen many problems as there are no many cars here.

From what I can make out, if your flipper glass is opened (press the rubber button where the rear number plate lights are), you cannot open your tailgate either by the handle or the button on the overhead console. This is normal. You need to make sure the flipper is well and truly closed. If the flipper is opening by itself, then you need to have this fixed. An open flipper (even if it looks closed, it needs to be latched) means you are not able to open the tailgate. Saves you smashing your glass on a low roof if you have both opening at the same time.

Re: Tailgate glass lift faulty

I searched but couldn't find the thread but I've read of this problem before (either here or another forum). Think it turned out to be a faulty switch on the underneath of the chrome trim.

Re: Tailgate glass lift faulty

Warning to all, I had my fob in my pocket tonight and must have double pressed the tailgate switch by accident. Result: - the tailgate opened into the closed garage door. It usually auto closes if it encounters light restriction, however in this case, it got jammed due to the contour of the garage door and had to be released/closed manually - freakin marvelous!! No visible damage but i'll check again tomorrow in daylight.

Re: Tailgate glass lift faulty

Thanks everyone, I think it probably will be the switch I am going to try and use the remote as I read in a previous thread you can swap the buttons to allow this as a function to open the flipper??? this should confirm the mechanism is ok and I can test the switch. I also didn't explain the problem well, we couldn't open the liftgate from the inside switch sometimes when the flipper glass was open without us opening it which is normal i know, but now i cant open the flipper at all. I wonder if the switch was faulty or staying slightly depressed causing it to open by itself sometimes and now it is faulty altogether??

Re: Tailgate glass lift faulty

BINGO! that was easy it opened no worries with the remote, I will try and get the dealer to pre-order a switch to save some time now, does anyone know what all the other blanks are used for on the remote (I wasn't game to try all of them without knowing first what they did). I will also let you all know what the outcome was with the flipper glass and the dealer response after I get it fixed.

Re: Tailgate glass lift faulty

The remotes or FOBIK are for many different models of cars and options. The missing buttons should be:
Flipper Glass
Auto liftgate
Remote Start (need a kit and the dealer to enable it)
Sliding door (US model of some van)
Panic Button
You can buy them online for much less with all the buttons.

I didn't think the auto start was available down here due to ADR?

Re: Tailgate glass lift faulty

it is available, as you can buy the kit. Getting the dealer to enable the feature in the ECU is another story. I have not tried, but a few have asked and been rejected.

Re: Tailgate glass lift faulty

I don't seem to be trusting our Aussie dealerships with the technical stuff, they either just don't know enough about them or they can't be bothered.

I guess the novelty factor of the remote start was there a few months ago, now I'm not fussed. I'd hate for one of these techs to "meddle".

Though I wouldn't mind a button on the FOB for getting the kids out of bed for these cold mornings
