100% on the money Steve, much appreciated on this tip.

Took it back today, and yes they had neglected to re connet the sensor.

I also got them to tighten the tie down loops they had neglected to do.

I'm a happy camper now, or will be soon

If you're down our way, make contact and I'll buy you a beer.

Thanks Heaps an a Merry Xmas.

Thumbs down Re: The Towing thread

Sorry if this has been asked before but I've had no luck finding info on this using the search
A friend has suggested you should NOT tow in top gear, as it is an overdrive gear and using it will trash the gearbox.
I've done about 10k towing now (pulling 3 tons), and on flatish roads use cruise control at about 90k she goes between 7th and 8th - 8th is more economical. She seems happy as so far.

A lot of these suggestions are based on old hearsay - does anyone have evidence as to what gear to use, and if cruise control is ok on the flat?

Many thanks
Phil

Please refer my post in the DPF thread, No. 412. Dealer advice is don't as it stuffs up the regen process.

I think the general consensus here is to let the auto do its own thing as the 8-speed transmission is capable of this. However I turn 'ECO' off when towing. This holds the lower gears for a little longer and also downshifts earlier. I use cruise but tend to do a paddle down shift as I start an uphill gradient. With a strong head wind I slow to about 80kph and select 6th gear which is direct drive.

Regards

Agreed! The gearbox doesn't know it's towing. It simply feels a load and switches down when torque reaches the computer determined switch point. There was a time when gearboxes had gears 1, 2, 3 and a switchable OD gear. The idea being that when towing, the OD was switched off to avoid excessive hunting between top and OD. I would imagine modern boxes are quite capable of handing this and the jump between the top two gears is not as great anyway.

I was letting it do its thing, but now as per the previous post I downshift coming up to a hill, in auto it doesnt like going skipping 2 gears at once from overdrive to 6th as 7th and 8th are together and the next band is 5th and 6th. Every now and then i would get a bang as it had to release from 7th/8th band and try and clamp onto 6th under load. Now I do it manually.

Re: The Towing thread

I have just has my BB australian tow bar fitted by a smash repaier after a small re end accident
The insurance company suppiled a new bar and fiited by smash repaier.
My question is does any know what the torque settings shuld be for the to bat bolts as they appear loose to me, and need to check before i take it back to the repaier.

Any help would be appreciated
Have search but could not find answer

Also check that there is no gaps between the bar and the attachment rails on the Jeep. I found a 4mm gap that required shimming. Because of this the correct torque bends the body support, not clamping the bar leaving a gap that allows the bolts to turned as the clearance was not taken up.

Re: The Towing thread

As I recall, the Best Bars instructions as to where the fish-plates go did not make any sense. The body member should be sandwiched between the fish-plate and the tow-bar flange. As to the torque, I didn't have an appropriate torque wrench at the time so I just leant on the spanner as hard as I could. One would have to be Arnie to snap those bolts.

Re: The Towing thread

I suspect that it may be hard to test the torque with the back bumper in place as I needed a spanner up the chute to stop the entire bolt/nut assembly turning prior to achieving torque. FWIW I had to use a cheater bar to achieve the torque figures, though I admit I am a more compact unit.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

Many thanks to one and all
I thought that since the bolts just turn that were not tight enough and the information now confirms this
So bank to the smash repairer
