Re: The Towing thread

Jeep GC WK2 in to service due to flat battery (4th Time needed Jeep assist) Service recently fitted new engine management module which they claim has been responsible for some electrical issues. Appears they are looking at battery drain overnight form an after market add on such as brake controller or replacement towing mirrors. Say that the engine management system is looking to shut down but can't and therefore draining the battery (my terminology) Anyone experienced dead flat battery when trying to start and whether or not related to an after market electronic product?

With a strong head wind I slow to about 80kph and select 6th gear which is direct drive.

I've been towing about 2250Kg Horse and float in Sports mode. I've found the braking etc smoother with it. Any views on whether to or not to use it in Sports? Thanks. HGM.

No issue here
Have P3 trailer connector does not draw power when car switch off
CB radio only draws power if i leave it on with motor switched off
Duel battery system no issue to date.

I think all instances of late model JGC battery drain have been initially blamed on aftermarket gear, but ultimately determined to be the vehicle subsystems. If my recollections are incorrect, I still believe the majority had nothing to do with alterations.

Most everything you mention can be unplugged, though the Clearviews could be a PITA. Unfortunately you might have to do this in order to get the service department to do further diagnosis. Personally, I would have thought that pulling the fuses for the mirrors and all incorporated subsystems would suffice, but it is conceivable that somehow they are keeping the Bus awake even when powered down. It would therefore be best to unplug them. Diagnosis can then proceed.

Now if you are then told that the BCM will not go to sleep if modules are unplugged, please let me know so I can offload my Grand ASAP

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

Hello,

Does anyone have pictures to differentiate between the Hayman Reese Tow Bars and the Mopar (Best Bar) Tow bars on our Grand Cherokees?

Would like to see what they look and how they differ, it seems like the HR looks neater tucked away (from what I've been told) but I lose my rear tow hook and potential future LRFT.

Any advise appreciated on your thoughts!

Cheers

Hayman Reese on 2012 GC via ECB's FB Page:

I only have very crappy pics or distant shots of my Best Bar, look earlier in the thread for more pics. Can't say I have eve stopped and thought it was ugly. Just thought it looked like a hitch receiver.
Who installs has a lot to do with how it looks. Earlier in this thread is a nice pic of one that looks like the bodywork was chewed away instead of nicely cut. I would say mine is average looking, as in average quality work on the finish and detail. It could have been done neater.

Re: The Towing thread

That's a neat shot, but there's definitely something missing... makes it far neater too! I also like the shiny shroud and embossed butt plug.

Seriously, I do actually like the diagonal anti-rattle bolt. It has at least some chance of doing something when in use. I know many people say not to crank them up, it always worked on our family's hard working cars.

I chose exclusively on price. There's not really much else to sway it other than the long range tank option. Forget the hook...

Cheers,
Steve

The Towing thread

Has anyone fitted a set of Clear View towing mirrors. After loosing my first bolt on (mirror) to the wheels of a semi I see that they have released a black and chrome set for JGC. At over $1000 with the electronics is it worth it.

Personally they don't do it for me.
My el cheapo mirrors work perfectly, don't vibrate, and give me heaps of rearwards vision past the van - but then again it is only 7'6 wide.
